CCSD policies and procedures require a parent to deliver medications to the nurse. For medication needs, a doctor's order and signed parent consent are needed with the parent bringing the medication to the nurse to inventory and store. CCSD policy does allow the licensed nurse to administer approved over the counter medications indicated on the student's individual Emergency Card for the present school year with written permission by the parent. Over the counter medications will only be given if and when appropriate.
To ensure the safety of all students, students are not allowed to bring and carry any kind of cough drops, over the counter medications or prescription medications to school.
The exception applies to students who need lifesaving medications due to life-threatening conditions and require a doctor's order that indicates ability of studentto self-manage and administer self carry medicine, not usually applicable to elementary school age children.
Any medication found in the student's possession will be confiscated and locked away in the clinic until the parent of that student comes to get the medication. School policy reflects state law in order to protect every student's well being. New doctor's orders with parent signature are required each school year per CCSD policy.
