Unfortunately, children may become injured during play and regular activities at home and school. Basic first aid will be administered at school for injuries that occur at school. Parents will be notified by phone for moderate to severe injuries that need further evaluation by the student's health care provider. It is important for parents to communicate with the nurse when moderate or severe injuries occur at home in order to continue at school the plan of care given by the student's health care provider. This communication allows for continuity of care in regards to treatment and safe administration of pain medication.
Injuries to the head may put a child at risk for a concussion. If signs of concussion are present at school following an injury to the head, the student will be dismissed with parent or emergency contact. Signs of concussion may not present for hours or even days. If a child has any signs of concussion, then the child should be evaluated by his/her health care provider.
The best practice is to have injuries of the lower extremities (examples: ankle, foot or knee) that hinder walking evaluated by your child's health care provider or if sports related, Athletic Director/Athletic Trainer recommended provider. Three guidelines are are needed from the child's health care provider for these injuries:
Recommendations for school
activity restrictions for PE and Recess
time frame to avoid stairs.
Written notification from the child's doctor/medical professional provided to the school nurse is necessary for the nurse to issue an elevator pass for students with injuries that impede walking stairs to classes on the second or third floor.
