Abrazos, a Family Literacy Program
Classes for Women and their Children under 4 years old
The Charleston School District's Federal Programs Department has been offering FREE English as a Second Language (ESOL) classes, parenting classes, and presentations on health, nutrition, and other topics to Hispanic women for 12 years. This family literacy program operates at Midland Park Elementary in the mornings. While mothers are in class, their children under 4 years of age participate in school readiness skills activities, which help develop their cognitive and language skills, as well as, their gross and fine motor skills. The child’s mother must register in the Abrazos program in order for the child to attend classes. Women who live in Charleston County School District's Title I schools' attendance zones are eligible to take the class.
