How the Rotary Has Partnered with Chariho High School
Interact Club: The Rotary has been working with Donna Caster and Michele Merlino by collecting food for the homeless and raising money. Incubator Program: The Rotary has been engaged with Susie Sacanpaco, helping the incubator program develop.Poetry program: The Rotary helped the poetry program, and loved engaging with students.
Frank Hopkins: “We are here and want to help the high school. We have a lot of talent in the club. What will help us is having our newest teacher membership be part of the club; currently we are welcoming 4 teachers to our meetings to hear the latest news the school is accomplishing.”
How Community 2000 Has Supported Chariho High School Students
Chris Philips (Community 2000): “We have supported the incubator program, invested money into technology for the one-to-one initiative, and much more. We are always looking for new ideas of ways to help kids in the school.” In the past Chris has visited students during lunch, bought them pizza, shared with them the mission of Community 2000, and to hear what educational supports students feel they need.
How Can the YMCA Can Support Chariho High School Students
The YMCA wants to help Chariho youth through health and making connections. “We are more than a gym, there are after school programs that operates in 3 elementary schools, we have date night events so parents can go out for the evening, there are teen nights, we have exercise classes, and an active senior population. We see Chariho high school students developing internship or mentorship opportunities at the YMCA through event planning, working with children in the kids program, and helping with the annual campaign to raise money so no one is ever turned away from the YMCA.” Upcoming Campaign Event: Dine and Donate.
Mr. MacKenzie: “We want our kids coming to the YMCA to make healthy positive relationships and connections, and develop leadership skills (working at a camp, participating in a fundraiser event, etc.).
Internship News
Ryan Northup (CTC Internship Coordinator): “Currently there are 37 students that are actively involved in an internship. Internships are a great experience for students to discover what it is like to be in the business world, what they like and do not like, and what they want to pursue after graduation.”

Ideas for Partnerships:
Concerns with internships
Meeting Minutes - 11/14/17
Meeting Notes: Review what’s new:
Now that we have a strong group with good ideas, we now want to start to put together some ideas for how to create more opportunities for mentorship, guest speaking, volunteerism, etc. Nicole provided an overview and shared updates of the CHS-CP website: Ways to Support section: Teacher section: teachers share the support they are looking for. Parent/community section: this is where the community communicates ways they can support the school/students. Check out the current partnerships on the “Current Partnership” page. There are 6-7 testimonies of partnerships to date, as testimonies come in Nicole updates this page. If you have any ideas, “Like, Build, Fix” link.
Parent Teacher Conferences: Table for the CHS-CP group with a device to allow parents/attendees to sign up be a part of CHS-CP and share their interests.
Volunteer/guest speaker: If the teachers could be more specific about what they need, this would be helpful. How can you take a topic and maximize it with a guest speaker. Need to look at it from both ends: guest speaker and teacher. Asked to share your business story: pitfalls and successes. It was interesting to see the questions the students asked. A day in the life series…
Internship and Mentorship group: The group discussed the value of internship experience for our students. A student shared his experience with both internship and independent study and the difference between the two. Director Auth shared the value of the internship experience for our students. He shared that there is a shift for students to participate in an internship or a mentorship program as an expectation for the CTC programs. He shared how if we can identify one solid industry partner, this can help expand and bridge connections for our students/programs. We realize that the business world does not match up with the high school schedule, but we try to fit out world into your business world. Dean F. shared how his business supported internships and the importance of increasing these opportunities within the Chariho community. He shared the experience for when students shift from intern to employee.
It was asked how the portfolio fits into this and if there is a way to get rid of the portfolio. Ms. Spas shared that there is a committee that is currently working towards re-imagining the portfolio. This work stems from the leadership team’s shared vision of creating a “ladder to learner autonomy”. The goal is to build opportunities for students to become more self-directed and autonomous as they approach their junior/senior years. The intent is to allow students to be able to access more independent experiences their junior and senior years like internships, independent study experiences, etc.
Director Auth suggested that it may be a big lift to ask all teachers to share what they need, but to ask department heads to share their top 3 needs at a future meeting. Narrow the scope to 3 areas where you would like some mentorship. Dean F shared that when he was in school, they would go to the board. The group discussed that it may be helpful to have a virtual board.
Donna shared how it would take some thinking to determine what it would take to put together for an internship for a HS student. Donna shared that a shadow or mentorship program would work well at B2B Gateway. It depends on student interest. Dean discussed the importance of defining the difference between an internship and mentorship.
Chris P. shared that Community2000 could help by locating students who could be potential candidates. We need to better define what are our mentorship needs? How do we let the community know what our needs are? We need to ask businesses what are some of the experiences that you have that students could experience? It was asked if we are limited to Chariho for internships, we can extend to surrounding communities? Nicole is going to make a commercial for the departments?
Prepare RI: employer gets reimbursed 50% wages for a summer intern. What if students experienced job share opportunities where they attended 3 to 4, so they can get a sampling. Mock interview experiences for students

Next steps-
Keep the momentum going! Meet once per month. Wednesdays are good.
Each person- bring one other community member to this meeting.
Connect teachers to community- help them to see the value of getting involved. Ex: List of possible internships for their students.
Advertise again, it has worked so far! Front Porch News
Word out to parents- we used Open House, now let’s pump up Career Fair involvement (Friday, February 16, 2018).
Community members see ways they can help students:
RICAN food pantry involvement (40 hours for NHS) - Phone interviews between students and staff to see what is involved from the organization’s perspective, students stay with volunteering after they see the benefits of helping others - Community 2000 grants, mentorships, internships, job shadowing (already part of grade 10 summer study- can be expanded) - Helping with presentations for students - Providing resources for starting a business- such as Adam’s Law Office, Higher Grounds) - Steps of operating a business, hobbies and special interests shared with students - Support and exposure for students to build job skills for all future endeavors, provide experiences that will help students decide “That’s for me; no, that’s not for me.” - Display of CHS artwork/photography- maybe gallery night at Higher Grounds
More ideas….
Craig envisions a Parent Page of offerings- opposite of the list of teacher needs - Andrea wants to welcome the community to be involved in our business department, incubator project is a new initiative - Susie wants to spread the word for incubator project through this group - Provide training for businesses willing to accept interns/students who someday want to open their own business - Provide meaningful internships that help students through college, into adulthood, into a career/out of a career. What is out there other than college? Can we help our kids find their way with community support, adults, peers, etc.? - Provide job channels for students- EB, Arnold Lumber, opportunities for students to be involved in supporting their peers at the college level - Experiences can also allow students to generate excitement within the businesses themselves - Involve Valerie as contact person- utilize resources of Richmond and HV Granges with our Agricultural Capstone Course - Experiences in nursing homes/senior centers of the area- (already happening with music/choral groups, now expanded from Health Careers to Cosmetology students) possibility- of teaching seniors to develop computer skills - Break out into groups during this meeting, based on interest or specific topic- guest speaking, internships- mini sessions?
