HELP us get to South Africa to Learn and Bring home a Reforestation Festival!
We need to fly our team of 6 Champions to Cape Town on the 13th - 21st of April 2025 to bring home a wave of climate action and activism.
We are seeking your urgent support to make our participation in the Green Pop Reforest Fest 2025 (18 to 23 April) in Bodhi Khaya Nature Retreat, South Africa, a reality. Empalai Kitai is a community - driven farm in Miri, Sarawak, focused on the education of soil restoration, carbon sequestration, and sustainable agriculture.
We are a team of intergenerational teachers and teenage students from Champs Education Miri. Our farm was an overgrown lalang jungle around our school which we have turned into a community farm more than 3 years ago with lots of herbs, bananas, mulberries, vertiver, ducks, fowls, aqua plants , fish and more. Today, it is a place of joy for the children, youngsters, parents, teachers and surrounding neighbours to stretch their feet and spend time on.
6 of us are going to the Reforest fest 2025. We are:
Susan Soh, founder of Champs Education who has incorporated global competencies education with the SDGs with international exposure trips and camps for youngsters to experience solutions to combat global crises.
Patrick Lim, administrator at Champs, manages logistics and ensures things are running in the community farm and in the team.
Japji Kaur , teacher at Champs, handles and oversees carbon accreditation - putting in calculating and monitoring systems to maximise our output and environmental impact. Japji is fully sponsored by UNCCD - United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification.
James is a 16-year-old student working on Biochar production and promotion. (for soil enrichment)
Elise is a 16-year-old student handles the production and promotion of PhotoSynthetic Bacteria - natural fertilizer and water health regulator.
Carlos is 15, working on promoting aquatic plants and aquaponics to the community.
All these support the teaching of SDGs, especially through climate action and food sustainability, driving our young people towards the impact industry leading us locally towards achieving the 2050 Net Zero Carbon Goal.
Clearly this team is voluntary - selflessly contributing their after-school hours and effort despite their own busy schedules and lives. Their passion and enthusiasm to restore nature is hearteningly admirable.
We have diligently explored every possible funding avenue. We have approached numerous corporate bodies, companies, and even politicians seeking support. Government funding, while potentially available, requires a minimum of three months for processing, a timeline we cannot meet. From receiving the invitation to attend this festival of action in late February, with the event fast approaching, crowdfunding has become our last and only resort to make this vital trip possible.
The total cost of our participation is RM78,600. This includes registration fees, flights, accommodation, meals, and insurance. We kindly request your urgent support in reaching our fundraising goal. Any contribution, big or small, will make a significant difference. You can also help us by spreading the word and sharing our appeal far and wide. We thank you in advance from the bottom of our hearts.
Our commitment to transparency are:
✅regular updates on social media before, during and after the event
✅Impact report on what we learned and how it impacts Miri and beyond
✅Workshops and knowledge sharing upon our return
✅First-option to harvest or purchase any farm produce at a special rate
✅Priority access to event calls for the Borneo Reforest Fest 2026
We believe that investing in reforestation & carbon sequestration is saving ourselves. By supporting our participation in the Green Pop Reforest Fest 2025, you will be a part of something truly special. Bring a wave of green growth to our home through our young Champions.
Thank you for your consideration and generosity.
Sincerely,
Susan Soh
