House Passes Foreign Aid Package, Putting Speaker Johnson's Leadership in Jeopardy
By Jullian Cauntay
The House of Representatives passed a $95 billion legislative foreign aid package for US allies with support from President Biden and members of congress from across the aisle. This came six months after President Biden first requested the aid. The delay came from objections from Republican hardliners who threatened to oust Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA).
This bill has been sent to the Senate where it is to be voted on on Tuesday, April 23 where it is expected to pass, clearing the way for the president to sign it into law.
The bills provided $60.8 billion for the Ukrainian war. Facing the largest resistance from Republicans, the package passed in a 311-112 vote. Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene’s (R-GA) amendment to gut the bill of every dollar was struck down by members of both parties. US allies in the Indo-Pacific including Taiwan and the Philippines received a part of the package amounting to $8.3 billion to help with China’s territorial aggression in the South China Sea. The package passed with strong support from both sides with members voting 385-34. $26.4 billion was allotted to Israel as well as humanitarian aid for Gaza and other regions facing heavy conflict in Palestine.
Additionally, the House passed a measure that would ban the Chinese-owned social media app, TikTok in the United States by forcing the company’s divestiture. It would also ban the company’s sale of Americans’ personal information to foreign adversaries like Russia, China, and North Korea.
With the passage of the bill, Reps. Greene (R-GA), Massie (R-TN), and Gosar (R-AZ) have said they would vote to oust the incumbent speaker. This comes a month after Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene introduced a motion to vacate the speakership against Johnson. 🐾
