With a score of 1-0, Spain won the 2023 Women's World Cup. England came in second place.
From July 20 until August 20, the Women's World Cup took place. 32 teams played in the cup. The favorite team for many was USA, but they were eliminated.
Spain won against Sweden in a dramatic semifinals match with the score 2-1. England won against Australia 3-1. Australia and Sweden then played for third, and the winner of the game was Sweden with 2-0.
The finals match between Spain and England was on August 20 at the Australia stadium. Both of the teams were seeking to win their first WWC title. In past matches between England and Spain, England had won 6 times while Spain had won 2 and 3 were tied.
Many thought that England would be the winners of this world cup. At the European Women’s Championship; England had won 2-1 against Spain. England had also recently won the Women Euro’s 2022 with 2-1 against Germany at the Wembley Stadium. Additionally, England has qualified for the World Cup about 6 times and finished third in the World Cup 2015 and fourth at the World Cup in 2019.
Spain has participated in the World Cup three times as well, and in the 2019 World Cup finished second in group B but lost the round of 16 against USA. Also, Spain lost against Italy at the Euro 1997 semifinal.
The final was very intense and had very good plays. The only goal scored at the final was made by Olga Carmona. Spain had a chance to score a second goal, but it was saved by the goalkeeper Mary Earps.
The Spain-England match brought an end to the Women’s World Cup 2023. The next World Cup will be in four years with the Women's World Cup 2027. 🐾
