The wildfires in Maui started August 7, 2023. The sensory system said that these wildfires were likely caused by a fault on the utility grid. It is confirmed that trees fell on the powerlines and that’s how the fires started.
The death toll for Maui’s wildfires have raised up to 111 with possibly 1,000 still missing. There is currently still a search for more victims of the wildfires with the death tolls expecting to rise.
Emergency responders sift through a wasteland of ash and debris to find human remains with help from anthropologists and cadaver dogs.
More than a third of Maui’s wildfire burn zone have been searched. About 38% of the burn zone was searched by Wednesday afternoon as authorities hope to cover much of it by the weekend.
“Identifying those who have been killed will be difficult, as the remains are largely unrecognizable and fingerprints are rarely found”, said Hawaii’s governor, Josh Green.
The total insured loss from the ongoing wildfires in Maui is said to be the second largest in Hawaii’s history. The insured property losses are estimated to be about $3.2 billion.
One firm estimates that the total area burned was 2,000 acres with 3,500 buildings within the fire perimeter. 2,200 buildings have been burned down by the wildfires.
This is all very important, seeing how Hawaii’s property values are some of the highest in the nation. 🐾
