  • The Cambridge Health Alliance Department of Emergency Medicine is made up of 30 emergency physicians, 15 physician assistants, and over 150 registered nurses. CHA provides care to approximately 100,000 patients per year in three Emergency Departments in Cambridge, Somerville and Everett. Cambridge Health Alliance ED’s are Massachusetts Designated Primary Stroke centers.
  • Fellows will work approximately 8 shifts per month in the EDs at CHA.
  • Fellows will join a team of experienced emergency physicians working in emergency departments that have served as national models of improved ED patient flow. The Chief of Emergency Medicine, Site Chiefs and nursing leadership are committed to a process of continuous improvement in Emergency Department operations. Improvements and innovations in Emergency Department flow at the Cambridge Health Alliance Emergency Departments has been profiled by the Institute for Healthcare Improvement and in academic journals. Emergency Department innovations include direct bedding, bedside registration and triage, and prompt evaluation. As a result of these innovations. the Emergency Departments at CHA have the shortest wait times in Massachusetts (median 12 minutes).
  • Cambridge Health Alliance serves one of the most linguistically and culturally diverse patient populations in the United States. Over half of our patients speak a language other than English at home, and more than 40% of ED patients have limited English proficiency and require the services of a professional medical interpreter. CHA is home to nationally recognized Medical Interpreter and Translation Programs, available in over 150 languages.
  • Recognizing that the care provided in the Emergency Department exists as part of a continuum of care that extends into the hospital and out into the community, the Emergency Departments at CHA have support provided by case managers, social workers and peer recovery coaches.
