In response to numerous requests for materials about developing anti-racist pedagogy and curriculum, I’m sharing a more resources. These build upon existing work that Sovandara has done in the Village School and that I've worked toward in the Middle/Upper School (reminder to search your Inbox for DEI tools and resources we've shared the past two years).
We hope this is helpful in your curriculum review and planning this summer!
This is the list that the DEI Department has maintained with PD opportunities for all Chadwick faculty and staff.
Last week, we hosted an impromptu professional development with Chadwick folks in response to faculty/staff needs.
This comprehensive curriculum document is a curated list of resources (books, videos, articles, etc.) organized specifically for educational stakeholders (teachers, administrators, students, families) interested in learning more about racial justice.
Pollyanna’s Racial Literacy Curriculum for Grades K-8 is designed to help students gain knowledge about race as it has been constructed in the United States. For younger students, lessons may take place during read-aloud or small group instructional periods, and for older students, lessons may be implemented during elective or advisory periods, and may also support humanities courses. Grade-level goals will continue to increase in complexity.
Teaching Tolerance's comprehensive K-12 resources can help spur much-needed discussion around implicit bias and systemic racism, but they can also empower your students to enact the changes that will create a more just society.
Facing History and Ourselves' Teaching Idea is a guide for teachers on conversations with their students about George Floyd’s death and the events that surround it. Such conversations are sometimes difficult for teachers to facilitate, and distance learning presents added challenges to teaching sensitive material. Despite these challenges, it’s critical to make space for students to process these difficult and deeply painful events.
I hope these are useful in your own growth as anti-racist educators.
As always, do not hesitate to reach out to David, Sovandara, or me to let us know how we can help.
