OUR PHILOSOPHY & APPROACH

In Middle School, we strive to ignite our students’ passion for Torah and secular learning. We stress the importance of the process of learning and believe that often knowing how to find the answer or ask the question is more important than the answer itself. We encourage students to try things for themselves, to explore and draw conclusions without fear of failure. We provide opportunities though which children come to value themselves, other people, ideas, skills, responsibilities, and hard work. Our students appreciate the unique qualities and contributions of themselves and others.

Our approach to education provides the best of both worlds. Our students get to savor their childhood while also acquiring a deep academic foundation and developing responsibility, leadership and a strong Jewish identity. We prepare our students to be lifelong learners and inspire them to impact the world around them by cultivating a commitment to Torah, midot, community and academic rigor. Students don’t just grow at STREAM School- they flourish here.

PROJECT BASED LEARNING

Our daily lives and work are not split into a math part, science part, history part, and English part. Children don't experience the world this way either. Instead, they live in a truly interdisciplinary fashion. What students learn at STREAM School, and how they learn it, more closely resembles the varied ways in which any of us acquire knowledge and apply skills in the real world. Understanding the relationships between different fields of study is key to a student’s education. The result: a deeper, fuller, richer understanding of a world that is truly interconnected. Through hands-on labs and project based learning experiences, we bring together science, technology, engineering, social studies, arts and math as children attempt to find new answers to real world problems.

In Middle School, STREAM and Social Studies topics are the hub of our rich Interdisciplinary Project Based Learning curriculum. Students work on a project over an extended period of time that engages them in solving a real-world problem or answering a complex question. Our students are fully engaged in creative, intellectual, technologically sophisticated activity that is of the moment and always relevant to real world events and issues.

Students respond to learning and understanding in a variety of ways. The product is no more valuable than the process, but is lasting and one of a kind. Academy students create artifacts and produce musical and dramatic representations. Their result may be a stop motion movie of a famous scene from the Revolutionary War, a 3-D representation of a New York City skyscraper, a mixed media representation of a historical figure and research report, or a gravity rollercoaster built from found materials.

SOCIAL EMOTIONAL LEARNING

At STREAM School, social and emotional learning is the foundation of our classrooms. We believe feeling connected, safe, and secure is key to academic success.

We use both Responsive Classroom, Conscious Discipline, & HEARTS Charter to support the social and emotional needs of our students. These programs are “woven” into the fabric of each student’s day. Responsive Classroom acts as an umbrella that spans across aspects of a student’s day.

Responsive Classroom is a widely used research-based approach to elementary education that is designed to increase academic achievement, decrease problem behavior, improve a child’s social skills and lead to more high-quality instruction.
