Microplastics and marine debris are a growing problem in our waterways. DEC educator Maija Liisa Niemistö explains their origins, how they affect aquatic wildlife, and what can be done to reduce microplastics and marine debris in our water.
Dr. Haoran Wei and Dr. Mohan Qin, researchers at UW-Madison, are embarking on a Wisconsin Sea Grant-funded project to study nano- and microplastics in the Great Lakes. Nano- and microplastics are ubiquitous in aquatic systems, but their presence in the Great Lakes has not been comprehensively studied. Dr. Wei and Dr. Qin will be using membrane technology and surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy to try to detect these infinitesimally small plastics in the Great Lakes, and study their movement.
