TITLE V Project
The U.S. Department of Education’s Developing Hispanic-Serving Institutions Program awarded Chandler Gilbert Community College (CGCC) a multi-million-dollar Title V grant set to end in 2027. Funds will support the implementation of transformative, evidence-based practices to increase the number of Hispanic, low-income, and underserved students entering college, persisting to completion, becoming workforce ready, and transferring to universities. Based on data collection and impact analysis, the project’s long-term objective is to affect systemic change through the institutionalization of initiatives proven to advance the academic attainment, well-being, and engagement of students facing unique challenges in higher education.
CGCC’s Title V Project title Éxito! Podemos Imaginar Contigo, meaning “Success! We Can Imagine With You” in Spanish, deliberately captures the college’s mission to empower students to learn, engage, grow, and succeed. Funds will build the institution’s capacity to achieve the Project’s three goals:
GOAL 1: Increase postsecondary education access, affordability, completion, and post-enrollment success
GOAL 2: Meet the students’ social, emotional, and academic needs
GOAL 3: Expand the college’s financial resources to effectively address emerging needs and opportunities
To maximize impact, the project’s scope of work centers on these initiative clusters:
College Preparedness, Access, and Enrollment
Expansion of dual enrollment course catalogs in service area high schools with high populations of Hispanic, low-income, and other ethnically underrepresented students.
Strengthening of dual enrollment course instructor pipelines through enhanced professional development for high school teachers.
Creating clearer dual enrollment STEM pathways in Cybersecurity, Artificial Intelligence, and Engineering to make transfer of course credits more efficient, seamless, transparent, and cost efficient.
Intentional “High-Touch” Services To Close Equity Gaps
Implementation of personalized early connection mechanism to lessen navigational challenges for new students leading them to critical information, resources, and campus activities.
Using intrusive case management with customized referrals, improvement plans, progress monitoring, and personal accountability.
Ongoing identification, implementation, assessment, and enhancement of evidence-based and culturally competent practices that can advance the retention, completion, and transfer rates of underserved students.
Promoting Community and Student Engagement
Development of bi/multilingual print and digital materials to make information access more equitable, nurture feelings of inclusion and belonging among diverse individuals, and help families understand and support their students’ academic and career goals.
Expansion of the eSports Learning Lab to enhance student engagement opportunities and help develop teamwork, communication, self-assurance, decision-making, and concentration amongst participants– all soft skills linked to persistence in college and coveted by prospective employers.
Embed internships and other real work experiences in credit bearing courses for increased professional networking opportunities, development of concrete industry experience and qualifications, and student success beyond the classroom.
Faculty and Staff Student-Responsive Training
Provide strength-based pedagogical training that draws on first-generation, Hispanic, and diverse students’ cultural capital lens for increased student self-reflection on experiences and identities that help place course content into context.
Offer professional development for faculty and staff about student mental health awareness issues and well-being in the wake of COVID.
Expansion of Financial Resources
Creation of a $200,000 endowment to add financial resources that support student success initiatives and the retention of low-income, Hispanic, and other underrepresented students.
Financial wellness lessons for students and the community in paying for a college education and making strategic money management choices for long-term benefit and wealth-building.
