Distance learning tips for Middle & High School Students

Here are some tips on how to successfully learn from home, adapted from advice from UC Santa Cruz!

  1. "Just a normal day"- act as if you're still actually going to school! Get up in the morning, brush your teeth, get dressed for the day, and don't forget to eat breakfast!

  2. If you can, have a space that's just for schoolwork. This could mean you have a section of the couch or table that's just for schoolwork during the day.

  3. Keep the other screens away from your schoolwork space - I know this is hard, but it's super tempting to just watch YouTube or TikTok videos if your phone is sitting in front of you!

  4. Learn online classroom social rules (etiquette). For more information on this, check out the article link below.

  5. Use alarms, calendars, and apps that make a lot of noise when you forget the stuff you need to do! (I personally love Alarmy- you can set it up so that you have to do math problems or take a picture of a specific thing in your house before the alarm will turn off!)

  6. Pace your work- you can't do it all at once! Ask the adults in your life for help if you don't know how to do this.

  7. Get involved! Even if you're just talking in the chat box, you'll have a way easier time focusing and get more out of your schoolwork if you get engaged.

  8. Take lots of active breaks- get up and move, and let your eyes look at something other than a screen!

  9. ASK FOR HELP. If you need help, ask a teacher, another adult, or a friend for help!
