Course Description:
This course is a semester-long course in which the student will reinforce touch-keyboarding skills. The keyboarding portion of the class will emphasize correct technique, accuracy, and speed. The computer applications portion of the class will emphasize intermediate development of knowledge and skills involving computer applications, technology vocabulary, and career exploration.
Specifically, topics covered in 8th grade include the following*:
Google Sheets
SketchUp (3D modeling)
Pixlr (graphic design)
Career Exploration
Technology Vocabulary
Coding & Robotics Introduction
Personal Finance
*Though not required in the curriculum, manners will be taught as needed.
Grading:
The course will be weighted into four categories as shown:
Class Participation 5%
Keyboarding Technique, Speed, and Accuracy 35%
(Daily Typing: 10% + Final Typing Test: 25%)
Computer Applications (Assignments) 45%
Vocabulary Quizzes 15%
Participation includes staying on task, working/typing quietly, staying at your own computer, and keeping hands and feet to yourself.
Keyboarding technique includes proper use of Home Row and keeping eyes on the screen.
The speed portion of the keyboarding grade is as shown:
40+ WPM A
31 – 39 WPM B
22 – 30 WPM C
13 – 21 WPM D
12 or less WPM F
WPM = Words Per Minute
***Assignments can be submitted or resubmitted after the due date for up to full credit if the student sends a request to Mr. Deister via email to regrade the assignment.**
Classroom Expectations:
• Respect yourself, others, and school property
• Be in your seat and ready to begin class on time
• Come to class prepared to learn
• Actively participate in class
Classroom Consequences:
• 1st Offense: Reminder/Warning
• 2nd Offense: Change seat/seating chart
• 3rd Offense: Pod Reflection Form and phone call home
• 4th Offense: Lunch detention with Mr. Deister
• 5th Offense: Office referral
