Does my child need to know anything about music?
Any student, no matter how much musical knowledge he or she has, can be in music at Watkins. There is no audition required to enroll in a beginner class.
Do we have to own an instrument?
No student needs to purchase an instrument for orchestra. All students may rent an instrument through one of our local providers. Additionally, families with financial need may borrow an instrument from the school/district.
Are there music high school credit courses?
No, however, colleges often look for students that are committed to one activity for several years. Staying in band, choir, or orchestra throughout middle school and high school can help to boost a college application as well as test scores!
What is the cost to participate in the Orchestra?
The orchestra has a small fee at the beginning of the school year that pays for the supplies and informal uniform. Any other fees will be for events like contests, trips, social events, etc will be on an as-needed basis.
Can my student participate in Music and Athletics when they are in the 7th and 8th grades?
Of course! The band, choir, and orchestra programs here at Watkins have several student athletes who play football, volleyball, basketball, track, and many other sports. We love celebrating our student athletes!
Can my student participate in orchestra and another music(band or choir) or theater class when they are in the 7th and 8th grades?
Absolutely! The band, choir, and orchestra programs here at Watkins have several student athletes who participate in other fine arts programs at Watkins.
