Language Arts

An effective word study curriculum covers phonemic awareness, letter/sound work, spelling patterns, high frequency words, word structures, and strategies for problem-solving words.

Students are expected to know the following by the end of each 9 weeks' grading period:

1. 1st 9 weeks - 20 letters (can be a combination of upper and lower case letters), 10 letter sounds, and 6 high frequency words.

2. 2nd 9 weeks - 27 letters (can be a combination of upper and lower case letters), 15 letter sounds, and 16 high frequency words.

3. 3rd 9 weeks - 38 letters (can be a combination of upper and lower case letters), 21 letter sounds, and 23 high frequency words.

4. 4th 9 weeks - 52 letters (all upper and lower case letters), 23 letter sounds, and 31 high frequency words.

Please work with your child daily on letter identification, letter sounds and high frequency words. The Practice Sight Words PowerPoint includes an audio feature, so you can just download the file and have the student practice that while you're maybe cooking dinner. Their reading and writing will improve as their letter and high frequency word knowledge base increases.

These are some youtube videos that we use to go over letters and letter sounds.
