Word Study

We will take a systematic approach to phonics, vocabulary, and spelling instruction. Students will have opportunities to practice with word patterns that help them learn to spell, read, and write words.

Grammar

We will learn and practice a new skill each week:

  • Nouns/Pronouns

  • Verbs/Verb Tense

  • Articles

  • Contractions

  • Adverbs

  • Prepositions

  • Poetry Punctuation

  • Editing

  • Letter Conventions

Handwriting

Students will learn to write in cursive this year:

  • Review of lowercase and capital print letters

  • Formation of lowercase cursive letters

  • Formation of capital cursive letters

  • Build fluency from capital to lowercase

  • Develop writing skills in cursive words, phrases, and sentences

Social Studies

Content will be integrated into reading/writing workshop. The various topics we will learn are:

  • Citizenship

  • Government

  • Geography

  • Community

  • Map Skills

  • Economics

Our main goal is to make reading fun! However, it is important to make sure your student is reading appropriate books for their brain. Each brain develops at a different rate and that's okay! Your student should not only be able to read the words but also comprehend what they are reading.
