Course Requirements and Classroom Expectations
Objective:
During the semester we will study criminal proceedings, law enforcement and the judicial process. Along with the book, we will rely on newspapers, magazines, the Internet, and other sources for current information about the law.
Class Participation
Being an active, responsible, involved member of this class is CRITICAL. Your questions and opinions on the topics we study are important to the success of the class.
Therefore, we must all work to maintain an atmosphere of trust and respect in the classroom. Please do not come to class sit back and listen and expect not to participate
-that won’t work!
Throughout the semester you will work independently and in groups. Your classmates will depend on your effort so begin thinking as a team member right now. At various times you will actually offer your thoughts and teach the class what you have learned in your research. You will have several opportunities to present information in front of the class. This is not designed to embarrass you. Presentations are your opportunity to display your thought process and work on your communication skills. This will help you in the future whether or not you choose to pursue a career in a field relating to the law. Bottom Line – PLAN ON BEING AN ACTIVE PART OF THE CLASS.
Classroom Discipline
All students are expected to behave appropriately in the classroom. Students disrupting the classroom will not be tolerated. Class expectations and responsibilities have been established in the classroom to protect the learning environment that students deserve. Students who fail to follow the classroom guidelines will participate in the following steps:
Grade Distribution
55% Test/Projects
45% Daily Work
Procedures/Expectations
When an assignment is given, a due date will also be given. The assignment must be turned in by the due date or it will be assessed a late penalty. When you are absent from class it is YOUR RESPONSIBILITY to acquire your missing assignment. You may contact me in the mornings or after school about missing work.
Differentiated Instruction - Fair ISN’T Always the Same
Every student is different and learns at a different pace. Our class is developed to allow students to learn using different styles and in multiple ways. In World Geography, teachers will work closely with students to achieve academic goals by:
Understanding each others’ unique learning styles, interests, and academic skill sets
Participating in activities and lessons that address these learning differences.
Fairness doesn’t mean the same for every student. It is the educator’s role to identify and prepare for the differences that exist in every classroom. Assignments and activities will be developed to meet students’ individual needs in order for them to be successful.
Course Materials- What is Needed to be Successful
Each student will need the following materials for class assignments.
A 1 Inch binder, loose leaf paper, and dividers
Blue or black ink pens
No. 2 pencil with erasers
Colored pencils
Late Work Guidelines – For Daily Work- The assignment may earn up to an 80 for the first day that it is late. An additional 10 points will be deducted for each day late up to a maximum of 50 point deduction. After 5 days the grade will remain a 0. Students are expected to make up all Absent Work in a TIMELY manner.
Retest/Redo Guidelines - Summative assessments will be subject to the campus retest/redo policy: A student should have one opportunity each grading period to retake 1 Summative assessment. The highest grade a student can earn on a test retake will be a 70. A student may not earn a grade lower than the original grade. Prior to retesting, the teacher should require a tutorial. District benchmarks are not included in the retest opportunity. The highest grade a student can earn on a redone assignment will be a 70. A student may not earn a grade lower than the original grade.
