In an effort to ensure that all students are receiving the most appropriate mathematics instruction focused on their specific learning needs, CFCI has developed various pathways for engaging in math content and curriculum in middle school.
Students new to CFCI in middle school will be given consideration for placement upon review of the student’s academic record.
Criteria for Math I & Math II Pathways:
(must meet all or most)
Demonstrates mastery of previous grade’s math class (Level 4 on report cards)
End-of-Grade Math test scores of Level 5
Scores 90th percentile or higher on most recent math benchmark tests
Highly organized
Math motivated; passion for math learning
Positive teacher recommendation
Signed parent letter acknowledging expectations and requirements for taking a high school credit course in middle school
What to Expect:
High school pace
High school workload
Homework
Increased expectation for depth of study
Independent study
Productive struggle
How do these courses impact high school?
Earn credit towards graduation
Course reported on high school transcript
Opens up student’s high school schedule for other advanced coursework or additional electives
Final grade is NOT calculated in student’s high school GPA
How are these courses different in middle school?
End-of-Course test (e.g. for Math 1) counts 20% of the grade
Grade reported on high school transcript
Credit earned towards graduation
What happens if a student does NOT take these courses in middle school?
Students will be enrolled in their traditional grade level math course
Students can still gain access to advanced math in high school
