Curricular Materials in English Language Arts

Words Their Way™ is a curricular approach to phonics, vocabulary, and spelling instruction for students in kindergarten through eighth grade. The program is implemented as a supplemental curriculum in the district and aims to provide a practical way to study words with students. The purpose of word study (which involves examining, manipulating, comparing, and categorizing words) is to reveal logic and consistencies within written language and to help students achieve mastery in recognizing, spelling, and defining specific words.

Wonders, a comprehensive literacy curriculum, is designed to meet the challenges of today’s classroom and reach all learners. A wealth of research-based print and digital resources provide unmatched support for building strong literacy foundations, accessing complex fiction and nonfiction texts, writing to sources, and building social emotional learning skills. Whether in the core classroom, an English language learner, or benefiting from intervention support, Wonders provides students equity of access to rich texts and rigorous instruction.

Math

In grade three, students will continue to build their concept of numbers, developing an understanding of fractions as numbers. They will learn the concepts behind multiplication and division and apply problem-solving skills and strategies for multiplying and dividing numbers up through 100 to solve word problems. Students will also make connections between the concept of the area of a rectangle and multiplication and addition of whole numbers.

Activities in Third Grade Math

Activities in these areas will include:

•  Understanding and explaining what it means to multiply or divide numbers

•  Multiplying all one-digit numbers from memory (knowing their times table)

•  Multiplying one-digit numbers by multiples of 10 (such as 20, 30, 40)

•  Solving two-step word problems using addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division

•  Understanding the concept of area

•  Relating the measurement of area to multiplication and division

•  Understanding fractions as numbers

•  Understanding and identifying a fraction as a number on a number line

•  Comparing the size of two fractions

•  Expressing whole numbers as fractions and identifying fractions that are equal to whole numbers (for example, recognizing that 3⁄ 1 and 3 are the same number)

•  Measuring weights and volumes and solving word problems involving these measurements

•  Representing and interpreting data

Curricular Materials in Math

Students will experience activities that ensure a progression of knowledge in McGraw-Hill My Math curriculum materials throughout kindergarten to fifth grade.  This framework is a foundation for rigorous standards, resulting in a program that provides the conceptual understanding, key areas of focus, and connection to prior concepts and skills for each grade.

Science

Science in third grade expands on different scientific fundamentals like motion, life and survival for organisms other than humans, environmental shifts and evolving, and weather. Students will gain more experience in predicting several outcomes within all of these topics. They will learn to predict how obstacles change an object's motion, or predict future movement. They also will practice predicting weather characteristics based on seasons and previous cycles. Your child should also be able to demonstrate how the environment can impact an organism sometimes more than inherited traits. For example, if an animal’s parents are healthy, your child should be able to explain that the offspring will most likely also be healthy, unless they eat too much causing them to be overweight.

Social Science: Communities Near & Far

In third grade, students will move forward from developing the foundation of their skills into putting their knowledge and skills into action. Students will learn geography, economics, civics and history as it relates to Southern Illinois and the City of Carbondale.

Activities in Third Grade in Social Science

Students will learn:

Physical Education & Health
