Sheltered English Classrooms & ESL Instruction

English Learners are clustered into one or two classrooms in grades K-5 to receive sheltered English instruction. These classrooms follow the same learning standards as non sheltered English classrooms while using differentiated teaching strategies especially designed for English learners. Sheltered instruction is a set of teaching strategies designed for teachers of academic content that lower the linguistic demand of the lesson without compromising the integrity or rigor of the content.

Most Sheltered English classrooms in the district are taught by a general education teacher with an English as a Second Language endorsement. An English as a Second Language teacher joins the Sheltered English classroom to provide additional language support daily. Additionally, students whose native language is Arabic or Spanish receive native language support in all content areas.

Students in grades 6-8 receive English as a Second Language (ESL) instruction. The English as a Second Language program enables students whose first language is something other than English to achieve English proficiency. English Language Learners require additional English language support to develop reading, writing, listening and speaking skills. The ESL teacher gives instruction on social as well as academic language. In the ESL classroom, English Learners are prepared for the challenges of grade-level academic content and are provided with the resources they need to succeed in the mainstream classroom.
