FIGHTING CANCER on two wheels

MURRAY TO MOYNE 2021

Jim Waight and a group of 11 friends are participating in the Murray to Moyne Cycling Relay (see https://murraytomoyne.com.au/) that is being held on the 1st and 2nd April 2021. Cycling 520km across two days from Swan Hill to Port Fairy.

WHY ARE WE RIDING?

In November 2019, Jim was diagnosed with Non-Hodgkin’s Follicular Lymphoma (a form of blood cancer) Since that time he has undergone six cycles of chemotherapy and in June 2020, found out he was in remission. Jim is determined to make a difference to unlocking the mystery around cancer which so many people experience and numerous families are affected by so drastically. Therefore, he and his team have decided to ride in The Murray to Moyne to raise funds for The Fiona Elsey Cancer Research Institute and to make a practical difference.

OUR TEAM NAME - 'Jimmy’s Licorice Allsorts'

This may seem a comical name, and maybe it is – and don’t we all need a bit of comic relief in our lives! There are several layers to this title that speaks deeply about a cancer journey. Firstly it points to cancer itself. ‘Allsorts” means anyone can be touched by cancer. Cancer is indiscriminate to ‘all sorts” of people. Cancer can wreak havoc in all sorts of ways in people’s lives. The name, therefore, is a tribute to all cancer patients and survivors. The image of a “licorice allsort” is that it is encased in black. This might be a metaphor for the tough road a cancer patient is on. We notice too though and most importantly that the “licorice allsort” is not all black there is colour and lots of it and once you indulge there is also a sweetness. This leads us to reflect upon the support of family and friends and the hope that this brings to cancer patients. Allsorts also paints the picture that everyone can make a difference. Everyone, who ever they are wherever they are can contribute to a person’s cancer journey by being there for those suffering this disease and supporting them.

In The Jimmy’s Licorice Allsorts Ride the team are being supported by family, friends and sponsors. We can all contribute to future outcomes of cancer patients by raising funds for The Fiona Elsey Cancer Research Institute through the The Jimmy’s Licorice Allsorts Murray to Moyne Ride. We can all get in and have a go.
