As part of the Americans with Disabilities Act and Section 504 of

the Rehabilitation Act of 1973

Under Section 504, an individual with a disability (also referred to as a student with a disability in the elementary and secondary education context) is defined as a person who:

(1) has a physical or mental impairment that substantially limits a major life activity;

(2) has a record of such an impairment; or

(3) is regarded as having such an impairment.

Similar to establishing eligibility for an IEP, a 504 plan requires that the student is evaluated and assessed to see if they qualify for a 504 plan based on the above requirements. Through the evaluation process, a knowledgeable group of educators will assess the student for eligibility, at the initial 504 plan meeting, the team will review the results of this assessment. If the student then qualifies for a 504 plan, accommodations/supports/services will be discussed. The 504 Plan is reviewed annually.
