Dear Colleague,
On behalf of Columbia Engineering and Columbia Undergraduate Admissions, we are pleased to inform you and your students about the Engineering Preview at Columbia (EPC). As a counselor and adviser, you are invited to share this opportunity with one or two of your program's outstanding seniors (based on our recommendations below) who demonstrate a strong interest in engineering, science, math and technology. Your students may apply for this selective program via our online application.
EPC was created to encourage high-achieving high school seniors from low-income backgrounds to explore an engineering education at Columbia. This year EPC is taking place on Sunday, October 13, through Tuesday, October 15, 2024.
Program Highlights Include:
100% funding: Columbia will fund and arrange hotel and travel accommodations, including air, rail and ground transportation, for the student and one parent/guardian. All meals and snacks during the program will be provided for the student as well.
World-class faculty and research: Students will meet members of Columbia’s renowned faculty and visit our world-class research centers.
The NYC advantage: Students will experience New York City and the unparalleled cultural, research, career and entrepreneurship opportunities at our doorstep.
Inside look at life as a Columbian: Students will experience campus life and meet with current students. In previous years, participants have met student leaders from a variety of student organizations such as Engineers Without Borders, the National Society of Black Engineers, the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers, the Native American Council and the Society of Women Engineers.
Understanding the admissions process: Students will participate in comprehensive college admissions and financial aid workshops conducted by Columbia Undergraduate Admissions and Columbia Financial Aid & Educational Financing staff.
EPC is designed for high-achieving high school seniors who have:
Exemplary academic records, particularly in math and science, including coursework in calculus, physics and chemistry
Sincere interest in pursuing an engineering education
Genuine appreciation for the vibrant Columbia community, which brings together students with varied lived experiences
EPC is designed to serve students who may have had less exposure to the fields of engineering and applied science including:
Low-income students
Students who will be the first generation in their family to attend college
Students from underserved and rural communities
Students who qualify for Free or Reduced Price Lunch
Students attending Title 1 or economically-disadvantaged high schools
Due to the selectivity and limited size of the program, a school-issued transcript is required to apply. Unofficial copies, such as those provided by a counselor or printed from an online grades portal, are sufficient to apply.
The deadline to apply is Tuesday, September 3, 2024. Please direct your students to our website to learn more if they are interested in applying. Students selected for the program will be notified in late September.
Thank you for supporting your students as they consider applying for participation in EPC. Please do not hesitate to contact us if you have any questions or if we can provide additional information.
Sincerely,
Veronica Aguilar Hornig
Director of Special Programs and Engineering Admissions

Hello,
We'd love to learn about your students through the application for Perspectives on Pomona (POP)! As a reminder, this year we’re offering two program options for students:
On-Campus Program: October 6th - 8th. Students may apply for consideration to both the on-campus and virtual programs by August 12th. The POP application requires the POP form, an unofficial or official transcript, and a short writing prompt response. Notification about selection will be sent by the end of September. All expenses (travel, food, accommodations) for the on-campus program are covered.
Virtual Program(s): Half-day sessions on either October 24th or 26th. If your students are only interested in the virtual program, encourage them to apply by September 30th. Only the POP application and a transcript including grades from 9th through 11th is required (unofficial and official transcripts are accepted).
Additionally, all applicants will be offered our fee waiver if they apply to Pomona—virtually no difference from those visiting campus! Please help them decide which option makes the most sense for them.
If you have any questions, please email us.
Chirp, Chirp!

Mississippi State University's application for admission for summer or fall 2025 goes live during Hail State @ 8 tomorrow, August 1, at 8 p.m. CT!
Why should students apply during Hail State @ 8?
Freshman housing priority is primarily based on the submission timestamp of a student's admissions application but may include a variety of other factors. Applying to MSU as soon as possible will also keep students up to date on important dates in the admissions process.
Students can submit the application on August 1 without submitting transcripts, test scores (optional), and the application fee/fee waiver, but we will eventually need these items to review their application for admission. The application requires general information, parental/guardian information, and academic information.
How do students apply?
We encourage students to set up an application account prior to Hail State @ 8. We sent more information about creating an account to students via email last week. They can also find the link to set up an account on our Hail State @ 8 page. On August 1 at 8 p.m. CT, students will go to apply.msstate.edu and log in to apply.
For students interested in submitting the application via Common App, that option will be available beginning Monday, August 5. This date is also when our spring 2025 application for admission will open.
Why Mississippi State?
MSU is a National Science Foundation Top 100 Research Institution offering 180+ undergraduate majors and programs. With hands-on learning opportunities and numerous social experiences, students prepare for meaningful careers while making memories that last a lifetime.
Hail State!

Are you a student between 13 and 18 who loves science and math? This is your chance to get creative! Enter the 2024 Breakthrough Junior Challenge by making a short, two-minute video explaining a cool science idea or mind-blowing math concept -- anything that sparks your curiosity.
One winner will receive a $250,000 college scholarship, their teacher will receive a $50,000 prize, and their school will get a new $100,000 science lab! The winner is also recognized every year at the Breakthrough Prize Ceremony.
Check out past winners to get inspired to create your own video.
Maryam, the 2020 winner, has advice for you:
“I just want to let you know it doesn't take a lot. I was working on a half-broken computer. I don't have any professional video-making abilities or software. The focus is on communication. And if you love science and want to share science, then nothing can stop you.”
Ready to show off your skills? The deadline to enter is June 25, 2024.
Good luck!

Remember that you'll need to complete the FAFSA for any financial aid at any institution you plan on attending after graduation. Some of the FAFSA questions are confusing which is why Thomascita Dawes from SJC will be here to help us. She's an expert. Please join us for our FAFSA session in Room 320.
We are excited to announce the expansion of Opportunity Vanderbilt, our nationally recognized no-loan financial aid program. Our expanded commitment will provide a full-tuition scholarship for all households with incomes of $150,000 or less, assuming typical assets. Opportunity Vanderbilt makes three commitments to cultivate a community of talented scholars from all social, cultural, and economic backgrounds.
For U.S. citizens and eligible non-citizens, the ability to pay is not part of the admission decision. When we read applications, we consider academics, school and community involvement, and other factors, but not a family’s financial situation. Not all colleges practice this, but Vanderbilt does.
We meet 100% of every family’s demonstrated financial need. Not all schools commit to fully meeting demonstrated need, but Vanderbilt does.
Financial aid awards do not include loans. Our aid awards include scholarship money that does not require repayment. Some schools include federal student loans or institutional loans in aid awards. Vanderbilt does not.
We believe that cost should never be a barrier to a world-class education. While our expanded commitment provides a full-tuition scholarship for all households with incomes of $150,000 or less, these same families typically receive Opportunity Vanderbilt awards greater than full tuition to support housing, food, travel and other college expenses.

Ever wondered just how much of a difference high school students can make in their communities? Through our scholarship program, our past winners have proven it can be profound. That’s why our 2024 Build A Better Future scholarship will also be a design thinking community improvement project based on the LAUNCH Cycle. We will award $10,000 to five new seniors, with the top recipient receiving an additional $5,000 grant to continue funding their project.
WE <3 OUR FUTURE GREYHOUNDS
… and we want to show it by treating them to a tasty meal, walking them through our scenic campus, and helping them connect with current students, faculty, and staff at our ENMU Open House event; they can Save the Date for March 23 and register today.
Another important thing for your students to RSVP for is an ACT/SAT test date. ENMU is still test-optional, but don't let your Future Greyhounds have a missed connection… having test scores can help them get higher scholarship award amounts.
Something else that has a nice ring to it: your students can apply to ENMU free of charge.
We hope you have a happy Valentine’s Day! We’ll reach out again next month.
