Tyson Spicer “Print”9x12, Ink on Paper, 2018 With my print piece, the style is realism with the print itself being based of a photograph. This piece symbolizes me in a way with the sketchbook representing art, however, the other objects like the Windex were put in the piece purely for humor. If I could go back, I would definitely add more items to the background. When it comes to what I really like about this piece, one of the things I love is how you can recognize what the items actually are and they appear moderately defined compared to prints from when I was younger.
Tyson Spicer “Painted Ladies”8.5x11, Graphite and Watercolor on Paper, 2019 When it comes to this piece, I attempted to do a realistic style that still has a unique feel with the way the buildings are presented. In regards to symbolism, the painted ladies are a staple of Californian architecture which are recognizable by most people. If I could change my piece, I would go back and add more vibrancy to the sky but I do love how bright the color of the buildings is. These pros and cons are the only real things I love and hate about the piece.
Tyson Spicer “Times Square”12x18, Graphite on Paper, 2018 For this piece, I ultimately went with realism while adding some drafting notes towards the bottom and side to create a unique style of an almost concept art styled work.One huge piece of symbolism that can be found is the New Years’ Ball at the top of the central tower. Along with that, most people can easily recognize all of the digital billboards as a part of one of New York City’s landmarks.If I could change something with this piece, I would definitely change the lower sidewalk area to left so that it doesn’t appear as rough as it does thus creating a more fluent left side of the piece.I do however, love how crisp the central tower turned out and how smooth the lines turned out on it.
Tyson Spicer “Sitting Alone”12x18, Water Colors, Colored Pencils, and Markers on Paper, 2018 My piece is a colored drawing of a pair of Iowa Interstate diesel engines parked on a siding in North Western Illinois with the piece’s style being realismWhen I created this piece, the symbolism was how solitary the engines were, humbly sitting on the siding, waiting to be called into action. It was interesting how serene the photo I took that I based this on turned out which is where my inspiration came from.As much as I love it, I do wish that I could ultimately go back and instead of using markers for the train, I should’ve used colored pencil to help it blend better with the watercolor sky. I do love how stark the trains turned out with the bright red and yellow logos contrasting with the blue sky and green grass and although it doesn’t’ entirely match, it turned out pretty good.
