Tyson Spicer, “Moonlit Beach”

12x18, Oil Pastel, Watercolor Paint, Hot Glue on Paper, 2017

My idea for “Moonlit Beach” originally came from seeing the house and sunset from our practice video. As we began planning, I noticed lots of people doing sunsets so I tried to make something unique. In the end, I ended up with the moon reflecting on the ocean.

When people look at this piece, I want them to think of a calm night, the steady breeze whistling through the grass, waves gently lapping at the shore, and the occasional tweet of wildlife. I want them to think of a calm night. If I had the opportunity to make changes to my artwork, I would skip the bright purple flower and I would add possibly a bird or a darker colored flower.

My favorite part of this piece is the palm tree that is barely poking into the scene, I just enjoy the piece’s power to instill serenity.

Tyson Spicer “Upper”

12x18,” Graphite on Paper, 2017

My idea originally came from doing an upper line subway from Chicago, where the tracks come from below and ride along the road. When people look at this piece, I want them to think of ordinary life then, I want them to think of viewing that life from a different perspective and see how it changes their view.

If I could change this, I did actually have to improvise a bit because my photo didn’t show the top of the train. It was supposed to be a ground level drawing but I ended up viewing it from above.

My absolute favorite part is one that viewers may not see.

If you look through the walkway, you can see the tops of buildings in the distance which show the train’s destination.
