Drawing 1

Paul Kuehn, "G.O.A.T Foot"

9x12, Color, 2021

The idea of the drawing is to be Micheal Jordan's foot. I first thought of the idea when I was deciding what I wanted to do for my portrait. I thought I would draw Micheal Jordan. I decided I was not yet a skilled enough artist to draw his face so I decided to draw his foot wearing his famous shoes. I enjoy basketball and Micheal is the best to play.

When I first started I used a graphite pencil to just sketch out the drawing on paper. I started with the foot, then the lines on the court then the basketballs. After that I started to color. I used colored pencils to color my drawing. I started with the shoe, then the balls, then the court. I used a blending technique to try and blend the color together so one cannot see the white paper.

The artwork to me really just means basketball. I want people to think about basketball and who could be wearing the shoe. I also want the person seeing the art to think about where this person could be standing on the court. There is a sense of symbolism because this is an actual shoe that Micheal wore when he played.

What was most difficult for me was probably just having to color all of the floor. I love coloring but it really does get boring. I spent almost a whole class just coloring the floor brown. It was also difficult to try and hide the white paper behind your color.

The style of art this is, is realistic. Not much makes it unique. I think the basketballs I drew were pretty cool. I really like the show. It is obviously the centerpiece of my drawing. It looks the best and makes the drawing.

Paul Kuehn "Pawn Chess"

9x12, black colored pencil and graphite pencil , 2021

I got the idea for this drawing mainly just because I enjoy playing chess. So I thought why not draw what I like to play. When I thought of an object to draw I just thought of this and thought it would look cool.

I started off the drawing process by just using a pencil and drawing the chess board. Then I drew the pawn pieces on the board first. After that I drew the table that the board is sitting on. Then I drew the pieces that haven’t yet been put on the board yet on the table. To finish I colored the black squares in black.

I really want people to look at it to ask why the other pieces are not on the board like the pawns. The reason is that the back row pieces may be able to do more moves but without the pawns you would fail right away.

The most difficult part for me in this drawing was trying to make each pawn piece look the same. I didn’t do perfectly well at this but I believe I did okay. If I started over the one thing that I would change would be to make the squares on the chessboard symmetrical.

The style of this is realistic. What makes this unique is really nothing. I don’t think I really have a style. I just draw what is on my mind or what I think will look cool. What I love about this drawing is the table. I like the lines I put in it. It really makes it look like wood.

Paul Kuehn "Birds in Winter"

9x12, Newspaper clippings, 2021

I knew that I wanted to use magazine clippings to make this so I was just flipping through the magazine and I first saw this page that was just a big winter scene. So I cut that out and used it. Then I found some birds that I thought were cool to add. The bald eagle is also one of my favorite birds so that was cool to use.

The tools I used include; scissors and stick glue. The process started with me finding a cool backdrop and glueing that on. Then I found some cool birds that I put on.

To me this artwork means the diversity and beauty of nature yet it is still simplistic in nature. I want my audience to think about the nature they like to see and how it made them feel.

I didn’t have any struggles making this artwork. I enjoyed every second of it and found it quite therapeutic. The most difficult part would have to be cutting out the birds. It can be hard maneuvering the scissors to cut where you want them to. I would change nothing.

The style of this artwork is abstract. The eagles are not in their original landscape. I have taken them from their original landscape and put them in a different one. Nothing really makes it personal to my style. I really don’t have a style. There is a lot I love about this artwork. But I love the eagles.

Paul Kuehn "Sandstorm"

9x12, Graphite Pencil, 2021

So the idea for this artwork was to draw the pyramids in Egypt. I got the idea from watching Ancient Aliens. They mention the pyramids often in that show and I wanted to draw them. I also wanted to draw some structures in my landscape.

I started off by lightly drawing the outline of the pyramids. Then I shaded the actual pyramids. I made each shade a different color and texture. Then I made the backgrounds, starting with the sandstrom then the sun so I could make a light source. Then I drew the shadows the pyramids create. Then I shaded the rest where the sand would be. I used a pencil and my finger.

The artwork doesn’t have a whole lot of meaning. I just showed the pyramids in a sandstorm. I really just want my audience to think about how the pyramids were built and how hard it must have been. There is no symbolic imagery in the work.

The thing that was most difficult for me was blending the graphite so you couldn’t see where I was drawing. It mainly just took time. It also took having to put on an even amount of graphite per and even amount of space.

The style of this artwork is realistic. I want it to look like a sandstorm hitting the pyramids. What makes this unique to me is its simplisticness. It took time and effort but it is still basic in the form that it isn’t a close up and not a ton of detail. I love that there is a sun peeking through the sandstorm.
