Noah Cummins "Money Making the Man"
Photoshop, 2019
The objective of my work was to show how money can hollow out a person. I took this picture after working at a vintage sale for school and me and my friends took pictures with the money. I knew I wanted to do something with this picture after taking it so I used it for this project. I used this green lightning brush to kind of give it the effect that something is creeping into me from the outside. I removed the reflection in my glasses to make me look more soulless. I'm also not smiling because the money that I thought would make me happy didn't actually make me happy at all. The quote I used is supposed to represent how money has the ability to make you "bigger" in society. I like how well the cut-out of me was cut out. It doesn't look sloppy. If I could change something I would experiment with the green lightning stuff. I accidentally put it on the same layer as my cutout so I couldn't really fix it without starting over.

The point of this was to make a poster for the school film festival. While brainstorming ideas for this project I just thought about things related to movies. My first thoughts were film strips and 3D glasses. So then I took some stock images of those things and organized them into a way I liked. Then I changed the hue of the 3D glasses to match the school colors and I painted the film strips purple and yellow. The goal is just to get people to do the film festival. I chose a very bold and all caps font for my typography because I wanted people to notice it. Also something about it just seemed cinema-like to me. I liked how the film strips turned out in the back, they look smooth and fluid to me. I'd probably make the glasses cutout a little smoother if I redid this project.

The intent behind the creation of this propaganda is to encourage people to support their claims with evidence and not make claims based on feelings. I’m sort of into politics and when given this project I immediately decided I needed to do something that is related to it. I picked a quote by an extremely educated political commentator, Ben Shapiro. Ben Shapiro is known for his absolute dominance in debates and always supports his arguments with facts. I used red white and blue to represent the United States flag to make it look political. I took inspiration from some Turning Point U.S.A. posters so I tried to mimic their typography use, since that style is associated with politics and a little patriotism. I threw the big brain in the middle because it gives off the idea of knowledge. I made it black and white so a pink color wouldn’t take away from the red white and blue. I was most pleased with the critique my peers provided, most seemed to like it shared their thoughts. I’d probably make the stars actually aligned because all I did was use a brush.
