Isaac Blandin “Fleeting Blossoms”
12 x 18’, Chalk on Paper, 2018
My drawing of a cherry blossom tree is in the surreal art style. It covers a realistic subject in a semi-realistic manner. However, it is abstracted away from true realism with its isolated, floating style. I think that trees as a whole are filled with symbolism. Trees are some of the most resilient entities in nature. When faced with hardship such as storms they are able to bend and take the torrent, ending up strong as even in the end. They are able to live through harsh winters and come back the same the next spring to grow even more. These are all things that people could learn from.If I were to do this work again, I would have brought in more bright highlights since many of these were lost in the protective spraying process. I would also make the blooms less dense in certain areas so it is more split into broken up masses rather than a single mass.Isaac Blandin “Long Live Prince X”
9x12”, Graphite on Paper, 2018
My drawing of the deceased rapper Jahseh Onfroy, known by the name, “XXXTentacion” is in the surreal art style. It presents a realistically styled portrait, but it is in an isolated, floating style surrounded by song names and significant terms pulling it away from a fully realistic drawing and allowing more symbolism and meaning to be put into it. Within the drawing, there are direct terms and symbols, such as the grave expression and the background of terms, scattered about referencing to many topics. One of the significant topics expressed in the work is his death in which he was shot and killed in Deerfield Beach, Florida on June 18, 2018. There is also reference to the nature of his musical career and the deep emotional connection which was built through his music to this large following in which he addressed wide spread, but serious, topics such as depression. Despite this, his reputation is often a point of conflict due to decisions earlier in his life and career and this is expressed at points in the work as well. If I were able to do this drawing over again, I would do a bit more to make pronounced texture in his hair since at the moment it seems a bit flat in comparison to the rest of the drawing. I would also make the text smaller in order to allow more to be written. One of the things that I like about my drawing is the perception of depth through shading that is present throughout the face in high detail. I also like the way that the words in the background frame the face, but doesn’t take too much attention or emphasis away from it.Isaac Blandin “Ink & Pressure”
9 x 12” & 12 & 18”, Ink on Paper, 2018
My print making of a tree ring and of a still life of art supplies are in the surreal style. They give the general impressions and lines of the subject without giving any sort of ornate detail or methodical change of values. In these works of art, I did not push as much as usual to embed symbolism into the work. However, the work of art with the art supplies into it strive to show very conventional medias such as paint brushes and pencils despite the fact that it is being created with a much less conventional art media of print making. If I were to do this again, I would have changed the paper color of the tree ring. Also, I would have worked harder to clean the plate of the art supplies print as it left yellow markings on some of the lines from the previous print, which I was not too satisfied with. If I were to be proud of any specific thing in these works, it would be the mix of yellow and oranges in the art supplies print.
