Morgan Machovec “Reflection”
16x20, acrylic on paper, 2018
I got the idea from looking through my camera and seeing the picture of my sister. She just got into photography and this was one of her first self-portrait pictures so I thought it would be cool to paint it. I knew I wanted to paint one of her pictures, and I thought since it was a picture of herself it would be memorable to paint her.
The meaning I want my audience to see is the insecurity she's displaying, since she’s covering her face with the camera. She hates taking pictures of just herself and I think in this photo you can especially see it.
If I could change anything it would be having more shadows, especially in the space between her sweatshirt arms and on her fingers. I think the painting would’ve turned out a lot better if I would have done more shadows.
My favorite part would be her hair because I spent so much time on it, perfecting the highlights. It took a long time but I wanted to get it perfect because we both love hair a lot.
Morgan Machovec “Vacation Dream”
12x18, acrylic on paper, 2018
I got the idea when I was scrolling through landscapes and I saw a boat on a shoreline. That picture made me think of my vacation to Cape May so I thought it would be cool to incorporate my own personal touches into the painting. As I looked up more boats on shorelines my idea got really clear and more vivid sine I could see others just like it.
The special meaning I would want my audience to see would be the boat. It is the only thing in my painting that has clear meaning whereas the sunset, the beach, and the waves aren’t at a specific place so they could make it their own. The boat adds my own personal touch whereas everything else is vague.
I would change the font of my letters on my boat, I wanted them to have more curls involved and less straight lines.
I love my sunset and the colors involved. It was was favorite part of doing my painting since it was so freehanded and was so flexible that I could mess up and easily fix my mistake.
