Can I try the instruments to help with my decision?
YES! There will be an instrument fitting night during which you can try all of the instruments offered. We can make recommendations based on initial sounds and sizing.
I already play an instrument, can I continue?
If you have experience playing an instrument we offer, you may continue to play it. Depending on ability level you will be placed in the ensemble that best suits your skills. Students with previous experience on another musical instrument tend to excel in band or orchestra.
What is the financial commitment?
There is no fee to join class. There is a cost for instrument rental, purchasing a method book, and obtaining a shirt for your school's music department. These items are specific to each school, class, and instrument.
Method books cost between $9 and $11 for most instruments with percussion between $15 and $19. Check with your director for more information. Instrument rental information can be found below.
MakeMusic Cloud is an internet-based practice and assessment program used by the Band and Orchestra programs. An annual subscription costs $14 per student.
Financial assistance is available and confidential. Centerville City Schools recognizes the important role the ARTS play in a well-rounded education AND we want every student to have the ability to participate in an ensemble! Please contact a director with any financial concerns.
How do I get an instrument?
We recommend waiting to get an instrument until our meeting unless you already play or are signed up with a private lesson teacher.
Financial assistance is available. See your director for more details.
We recommend the following local businesses to rent and purchase all necessary items.
McCutcheon Music 937-435-2900
Hauer Music: 800-544-2837
Baroque Violin Shop: 513-541-200
Purchasing an instrument online can be a risk when first entering the instrument world. Please hold off until the first meeting where you will receive a specification sheet to help guide you in your purchase.
Some instruments can be rented from the school at a reduced rate. See your director for more details.
When do Band, Chorus and Orchestra classes meet?
Band, Chorus and Orchestra classes meet daily during third or fourth period (depending on the instrument, group and school).
While there are no rehearsals after school, there are several evening concerts spread throughout the school year.
How long am I committing?
Performing ensembles are a class in middle school. This To truly get an experience and discover your capabilities, a year of instruction and practice is needed.
