Request a Special Administration
Requests are due no later than 4 weeks (fall) or 6 weeks (spring) prior to scheduled administration.
In very rare circumstances, a student may not be able to access the general assessment. For an online assessment, this might mean a paper assessment is required if a student requires a support that is not compatible with the online test. This decision requires careful consideration and adequate evidence to document the specific and unique need. The request for a paper administration of an online assessment requires TEA approval in most cases.
Learn more about Accessibility Features and allowable Designated Supports here.
Examples:
✔️a student requires braille materials for Interims (does not require TEA approval for STAAR, not available for BOY)
✔️a student experiences adverse health (seizures, spasms, headaches) when exposed to certain types of monitors.
✔️a student communicates with eye blinks and cannot be assessed by an online speaking assessment (TELPAS)
✔️a student is participating in an assessment in a setting that does not offer reliable internet access
✔️a student is precluded by a court order from accessing the internet
✔️a student requires a support that is not compatible with an online test (see link above for allowable supports)
Be aware:
🚫A special administration will not be approved because a student knows very little English.
🚫A special administration will not be approved because a student has limited exposure to computers.
🚫A special administration will not be approved because another mode is preferred.

Educator Guide to Accessibility within the STAAR Program
The Administration and Security Forms section in TIDE (external link) leads to the Accommodations Request Form (ARF) that educators must fill out to request a designated support that requires TEA approval. For a special administration of an online test (i.e., STAAR with content and language supports, TELPAS grades 2-12 reading and listening and speaking), do NOT submit an Accommodation Request Form. Instead, you must submit a Request for a Special Administration of an Online Assessment which can also be found in the Administration and Security Forms section in TIDE. Please include in the request any designated support requiring TEA approval the student may need.
The 2021–2022 Online Accommodation Request Submission Deadlines document lists the deadlines for submitting online accommodation requests for each test administration through June 30, 2022.
