What is Peer Tutoring?
Sometimes you need just a bit of help from someone like you who can help you understand better from a similar perspective. Peer tutors are not teachers, but rather peers who have mastered a certain subject or skill and can offer guidance, feedback, and encouragement to those who they are pairs to help.
A peer tutor WON"T:
Do your work for you.
Tell you exactly what to write or continually tell you the next step in the process.
Provide all the answers to your homework.
Grade or judge your work.
Introduce new materials or concepts.
Change your motivation or interest in a subject without your complete cooperation.
A peer tutor WILL:
Strive to help you understand the concepts so that you can practice the skills and become more confident in your studies.
Share their passion and enjoyment of a subject with hopes that you will find your own value to your studies.
Help you become an independent learner, who acquires critical learning skills, and helps you learn how to help yourself.
Help you develop the confidence to find the answers and to find the solutions on your own.
Ask you to find the definition in the textbook, read it a couple of times and then check your understanding by asking you to give the definition in your own words or to use the new concept in a math problem.
Guide your session to be “procedure oriented” not “answer oriented”.
How Can I Schedule a Peer Tutoring Meeting?
Click the link above to navigate to the booking page.
Select your desired date and then select the time that you would like to meet with your tutor.
Fill in the booking form so that you can be paired with a peer tutor that best matches your needs.
Submit the form and we will see if there is a peer tutor available to meet with you on your specific day, time, and need.
Watch your email for confirmation once a suitable pairing is found.
Please allow time for a peer tutor to be found that best matches your needs.
On the day of your peer tutoring session, arrive promptly to Room 85E in the Lower Level of the IMC with all necessary materials.
Note: Currently only Math tutors are available for meetings.
