Note to Parents:
Students need to be taking notes during class about the grammar topic of the week. These notes will help them define common grammar topics and identify mistakes, but we will also correct sentences. This helps students not only learn but also apply the concepts.
Students need to write using complete sentences. I know this sounds juvenile, but it is a real problem in my class. Even though they are reminded multiple times, many (if not most) students disregard this instruction. I rarely see capitalization and punctuation, and that is inexcusable at this point. I am subtracting points on assignments because I explicitly tell them that to earn full credit, they must use complete sentences.

After venturing into Island of the Blue Dolphins last week, I decided to reconsider our unit. We all agreed that our class readings have been pretty sad, and that it would be nice to read something more light-hearted. Today, we picked up Maniac Magee. I remember reading this book in middle school and really liking it, so I hope this group feels the same way!

We are working on a chapter-by-chapter packet to improve student comprehension and vocabulary development. After readings and packet work, the students and I have had great discussions about the novel and how it ties into American life, not only in the past but also in the present. They are into the book and that is a win for me!

Our reading unit for The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe has gone by surprisingly fast! We will finish this novel this week and begin moving into more activities that are related to the book. Students will be given a 'choice board' as their final project for the novel. The students will have several types of projects to synthesize the information they learned along the way.

We have been watching the movie for the novel, and once that wraps up, it will be time for project presentations. I think a few of them have chosen to create tests or lessons on various themes, so it will be fun to see them be the teacher!

Our Shakespeare unit will come to a close by the end of the week. I am always sad to see this one go! We will conclude by reviewing some of Shakespeare's most famous sonnets. We will analyze and discuss the works, and then move to our new unit.

The boys are working on a Shakespeare Escape Room in-class project. This will serve as their last assignment for the unit. So far, they are doing a great job working as a team and solving the puzzles!

This is a very busy group! We started reading The Canterbury Tales last week, and are also beginning to fact-check sources featured in AI research. After being assigned to choose a topic and write a research essay using AI, we are now in the process of checking the reliability of the sources provided. My goal is to challenge them to use trustworthy, fact-checked sources. They also need to understand that AI is not always an accurate tool.
The Canterbury Tales is presented as a reader's theater as an alternative to its original form. This version is far more successful than last year's attempt! So far, we have enjoyed it. I look forward to reading more of the pilgrim's tales with them.
