Zoey Fuglsang "Shoe"

"9x12", Graphite on Paper, 2023

At first, I had no idea what to draw, but from the examples that Mrs. Dunlavy had, I saw someone had drawn a shoe. I then decided I wanted to draw a shoe. I figured out what shoe I wanted to draw because I had just gotten new shoes and wanted to draw them. It also worked out well because I needed an idea for my black-and-white drawing and my shoes are black white and mainly gray. I figured it would be good so I wouldn't have to worry about the color of the shoe. It would be one less thing that I would have to worry about.

I started by photographing my show and printing it out. I put a grid on the picture and printed it out again. I drew a grid on my paper lightly with 1 by 1 squares. After I drew my grid on my paper I began my drawing. I started by just drawing the outline of the shoe and the outline of the swoosh and the shoe laces and any other bit parts of the shoe. After I got the outline of most of my shoe done I went in and started adding more of the little details on the shoe like the different textures on it. After I got done with the little details on the shoe I went in and darkened the areas that needed to be darkened and I shaded areas. I then was happy with the shoes I went along with an eraser and cleaned up the outside outline of the shoe. This project did not require that many tools such as a pencil, paper, ruler, and blender

There is no symbolism in my artwork. It doesn’t mean anything. I just want my audience to recognize what shoe it is.

I didn’t struggle much with my project but the one thing that I did struggle with was the different textures of the shoe. I had to improvise on my drawing because I accidentally started drawing my shoe in the wrong column so I will not have the very tip of my shoe in the drawing.  If I started over I would draw the shoe in the right column because then I would’ve been able to finish drawing the tip of my shoe.

It is unique to my style because it is my shoe and I like those shoes. The style of art is realistic. I don’t love anything specific about the drawing, I rather just like the whole drawing itself.

Zoey Fuglsang "Print Flowers "

Printmaking, 2023

To start I had yet to figure out what to do. I wanted to do something simple with little detail because I needed to figure out what I was doing. My whole goal for the project was to keep the drawing simple. I saw that someone else had drawn a flower and I like the idea of it. I chose just to do a flower because that seemed simple enough. It took me three tries to figure out which drawing I liked the best. I didn’t have enough time to do anymore so I just decided to pick my last sketch and use it. I wanted the flower to pop on the background so I chose to do a light gray with the purple and black with the neon green background.

I started with just my sketch of my drawing. I then took my foam plate that fit the size of the sketch. I placed my sketch on the top of the foam plate, put it on top, and secured it with tape. I used a mechanical pencil with no lead and went over my sketch leaving a tracing of my drawing on the foam plate underneath. I went over my sketch of the flower a couple of times making sure the indent of the sketch was deep enough on the foam piece. I then took my foam piece and covered the top of it with the paint color of my choice. I covered the entire top with paint except for the white indented areas. I then placed a piece of paper on top of my foam piece and pushed down on it. I picked the piece of paper up to reveal my paper.
The most difficult part of this art project for me was trying to get the stencil deep enough in the foam. If I didn’t get the stencil deep enough, my design would not have appeared on the paper. I made sure the stencil was deep enough by going over the stencil multiple times. If I started over on my project I would pick a new flower to draw because I did not like the one that I drew that much.

This style of art is non-objective. This is unique to me because I like flowers. I like the choice of paper and color I choose for each print. I feel like they clash pretty well.

Zoey Fuglsang's "Flowers from Byrn"

"12X9," InKProgress, 2023.

My first idea was to draw flowers, but I didn’t know which ones I wanted to draw first. I then picked out the type of flower I wanted to draw. I was once given these flowers by someone and wanted to draw them. After I found the type of flower I then looked a different ones and saw which type of one I wanted to draw.

I started by finding a picture of flowers that I wanted to draw. After finding the picture I put a grid on top of the picture that I found and printed it out. With the grid, I attempted to draw the same-sized grid on a blank piece of paper. I then started by outlining the flowers and went in and drew some of the smaller details. After I finished drawing the 3 flowers and some of the little details I began by picking out by looking at pictures of the type of flower and trying to imitate that color. After I was done picking out my color I then started coloring the one flower. I applied a light color and built it up so the color would be more bold. I only used a ruler, pencil, colored pencils, and a blending stick for this.

The artwork does not mean anything to me. I just want my audience to think about flowers when they see them because I tried to get them to look like flowers. The is no symbolic imagery in my work either.

The most difficult part of this project for me was trying to get the colors right and trying to get the little detail of the flowers to show up using colored pencils. Instead of just shading it and and using a pencil to draw the details I had to color it and use different shades of the color instead. I overcame these challenges by taking my time coloring and using different shades of colors and using white and black to darken the colors.

This style of art is non-realistic. This is unique to my style because I like these types of flowers. I love the type of flower that I picked to draw.
