My black and white drawing is of my cat, Leo. I got the idea because he is a black and white cat, so I thought he would be perfect for this project. To draw it, I used two different shades of graphite pencils, a white colored pencil, and a blending stick. First I outlined the part of the cat I was drawing with the darker graphite pencil. After that I drew in the shading by lightly drawing with the lighter graphite pencil, then blending it in with the blending stick. Then I drew the white hairs and the whites in the background. Then I shaded everything again with the light graphite pencil again and blended it in. There isn’t any symbolism in my drawing, the reason I made it was just because I thought it would be fun to draw a picture of my cat. My main struggle was trying to make the cat not blend into the background. If I had to do it again I would use a thin layer of white around the cat to make him stand out more. The style of the art is realism and I like how it turned out. This was my first attempt at a realistic drawing so I think I could improve on some aspects, like shading or using more shades of white and graphite, but otherwise it turned out good.
My combo drawing is of a band t-shirt. I got the idea to draw it because I thought it looked cool to draw. I used 4 different graphite pencils and a blending stick for most of the drawing. For the eyes I used two orange colored pencils. For some of the letters I used a gray colored pencil to help with shading. I started by outlined the important parts of the area I was drawing with a light graphite pencil. Then when I got an outline that I liked, I used a dark graphite pencil to solidify the outline. After that I drew details that I wanted to stand out. When I was done with that I shaded in all the details and blended them in. Next I got a dark graphite pencil and made the background black. There isn't any symbolism in my drawing. I struggled with getting the smaller details to look like they did in my reference image. If I had more time to do it I would finish the drawing and work more on the shading. The style of my art is realism and I think it would've turned out well If I was able to finish it.
These are my sketches throughout the year. I got most of these ideas because I thought they would be fun to draw. For all of them I used only graphite pencils, apart from the chicken, where I used red colored pencils. For the sketches I drew the outline of the whole drawing before adding details later. Once I got a rough shape I solidified the lines and drew the larger details. Once I finished that I started shading. With the chicken I started to color with the pencils. There is no symbolism in any of these. My main struggle with all of these was trying to get it all done in the 30 minute time period. If I had to do these again I would try to make something less detailed. The style of these from left to right are expressive, realistic, abstract, and surreal.
