Marjory Alger "Fear Of The World"

Size, Sharpie/Watercolor, 2022

My idea for this piece was to show how scary it is being a woman in todays society and the olden days as well. I wanted to give a bold message by adding red to the black and white piece which I love to do. I started of by sketching out the girls head shape and then I outlined and colored that in with sharpie. After that, I sketched out and did the same with the letters. My finishing touch was to add red color splotches to give a bold/scary effect. I used a spray bottle with red watercolor for that. This artwork means to show that it is and hs never been an easy job to be a woman in the world and the fear that comes with it. I want my audience to think about how women have to fear a lot of things in the world and to bring awareness to that. I would say there is a lot of symbolic energy in this work. The most difficult thing for me was getting all of the letters to match in size. I did my best and overcame the struggle by realizing that my best is all I can do. If I started over I would use letter stencils to make the words look more aligned and sharper. I would say this work is realistic since there is a portrait and there are words on it. What makes it unique to my own style is the pattern I like to use of black and white with a pop of red. I love the message this sends and the feeling the red splatter adds to the piece.

Marjory Alger "Too Much Love?"

Size, Acrylic Paint, 2022

My idea for this artwork was the feeling that you have more love in your heart than others. It started out with just a sketch but then I realized that color would add a whole other meaning to it. I once read that everything could always use a pop of red. I agree with that statement fully. With the rest of the painting being black and white the red sends its own message. The process of making this project started with first getting a random idea. After I realized that I liked this idea, I started to sketch out what was in my head onto a canvas. I started with priming the canvas with white. Then I drew over in pencil. After that, I painted onto the sketch. I painted the biggest heart red and filled it in. I painted a bubble and wrote my message inside. Then, I painted a lot of smaller black hearts but did not fill them in. Lastly, I did a couple coats of paint over the whole painting until I thought it looked good enough to be done. This artwork means to me how some hearts feel more than others. I think that the message on the piece is self explanatory but also up for some interpretation. The hearts are symbols of love and emotion. The colored heart the superior, and the black the less superior. When my audience looks at this piece I would like them to think about love and what the feeling means to them. I also would like them to think about how some love harder than others. The most difficult thing that came with this project for me was feeling like it wasn’t fully done since it is a simple idea. I overcame this by thinking about how simple art can still be meaningful. If I started over I would maybe do it on a smaller canvas. It works well where it is but I think that it would just look better on a smaller canvas. I would call this piece abstract because it is mostly just shapes and letters. It makes it unique to my style because I am still trying to figure out what my style is! I love the idea of love and messages about love through art.

Marjory Alger "Marisa"

Size, Pencil, 2022

My idea for this project originally started with wanting to do a portrait of some sort. I was planning on doing a series of three of the same picture. My friend Marisa is beautiful so I thought she would be a perfect person to make portraits of. I started off by finding a picture of Marisa that I thought portrayed her features well and chose one. I cut a board in pieces and painted one of them white. Then I stared using transfer paper/sketching the picture on to the white board. Then I sketched a bunch of flowers to surround her face and add a background to the piece. To me this artwork is just to show beauty. To me the work means that beauty exists and it is a wonderful thing to embrace since it is everywhere you go. I would want the audience to think that this is pretty and to give attention to Marisa’s features such as her lips and the shape of her face. I don’t think there is much symbolism in this piece but it is just to be a pretty sight. The most difficult part of this work was trying to get it to be perfect. I overcame the struggle by realizing that it doesn’t have to be perfect or my exact idea in order to be a good piece. If I started over I would do it in a way that was easier to add color to. I would say this piece is realistic since it is a portrait. What makes it unique to my personal style is that it has something about it that makes it feel familiar. What I love about this piece is that it looks like her face is emerging from the flowers and that gives a really cool effect.
