Lindsey Delich "a few seconds before happiness 1955"
9x12, pencil and coffee on watercolor paper, 2020
This is a drawing of a little boy about to receive a puppy as a gift. I got the idea from a photograph taken in 1955, titled “a few seconds before happiness.” To make the paper look older, since it’s supposed to be from 1955, I stained it with coffee around the edges. The artwork represents how quickly someone can get happy. I think that the whole concept is very wholesome. I want my audience to think about how beautiful making others happy is. Something that was difficult about this drawing was the facial expressions. I just had to pay really close attention to what emotion each person was feeling and look at every line. The style of this drawing is realism. I like that I kept the background empty because it really lets you focus on the people and how they are feeling when the picture was taken.
