Karrigan Roth “Baseline”
6x11, colored pencils and ink on paper, 2025
I wanted my baseline drawing to just be simple. Whenever someone says we can draw whatever we want I always think of drawing a flower. I used colored pencils and I just wanted it to be simple but have some shading. I did very slight shades. I wanted it to be very simple but have some detail to it. I want my audience to think that it is something out of a cartoon. My drawing doesn’t really have a symbol, I just really like flowers. This piece was really easy so I didn’t really struggle. If I were to start over I would make it more complex. My baseline drawing is realistic. I don’t really like much from it because it was my baseline that was like the firat thing that came to my mind.
Karrigan Roth “Wrestling”
18x24, colored pencil on paper, 2025
When I heard that we could do four different drawings, one being a portrait, I knew exactly which picture I wanted to do because I have a favorite picture of me from wrestling. After that she said that we would do one drawing in color, one combo, one black and white, and the other mixed media. I wanted to do a combo because I thought if I did the background black and white and the main part of the picture in color it would really pop and draw the eye. When I started I used the grid method to sketch everything out. I printed two different versions of the picture out. One in color and one in black and white. When I started coloring I did the black and white background first because it looked easier. When I finished the background I started the colored part. I really wanted this artwork to look realistic because I think realistic looking drawings are super cool. This art piece means a lot to me because it’s from my first year that I wrestled and that season was very successful. I want my audience to think that I am good with any type of drawing styles. When I was coloring the face or any part of the skin I really struggled with the shading. I asked for help and she explained it to me very well. It really helped with the rest of my drawing. If I started over I think I would try to get the background to be the right size. It’s not super to scale. This art piece is realistic, it’s unique because my mom caught the picture in action and it turned out really good. I like that you can really see what’s happening in the picture.
Karrigan Roth “A Duck On Water”
9x12, graphite on paper, 2025
When I was trying to think of what to draw for an animal I struggled because I don’t have any pets so it’s not like I have very many pictures of animals. I always thought that pictures of baby ducks swimming were really cute so I chose a copyright free picture of a duck. I used a graphite pencil, a blending stick, and a needed eraser to make my artwork. I had used all of those tools before so I knew how to use all of my tools. For my drawing I really wanted to make it look realistic and I think I did a good job with that. My piece doesn’t have a meaning. I want my audience to see it and think it is a real photo. There isn’t really anything in the drawing that has a meaning behind it. I really struggled to get the shading right on the water but the fur on the duck looks really good. When I was having trouble with the water I asked for help and it ended up turning out good. If I started over I would adjust how dark I did the black and white shades. The style of the art is realistic. It’s unique because you can see the reflection of the camera on the drawing. I love that it has those little circles up in the corner to make it look like a real photo.
Karrigan Roth “Painting the Sky”
9x12, water color colored pencils on paper, 2025
When I was thinking about what I wanted to draw for my landscape I didn’t really know what I wanted to do. I had recently been to a friend's house and there was a super pretty sunset so I took a picture of it. I decided to use this picture because the colors look super well together. I was getting my paper and the teacher suggested water color colored pencils. I knew that the colors would look super good if I used those so I did. When I started coloring I didn’t realise how pigmented the color would be once I added water. My artwork means a lot to me because shortly after I finished this drawing there was a death and my family and it really affected me. I have noticed that the sky has been very pretty and colorful since my great grandma died. I wanted my audience to think that the drawing was hard. The most difficult part of my landscape was trying to get the colors lighter, because of how much colored pencil I did. It was super hard to lighten them up and it made the paper kind of come apart because it was getting too wet. If I were to start over I would make sure that I did less colored pencil and switched between the colored pencil and water more often because originally I did all the colored pencil first and the water didn’t work very well. This is a realistic art piece. I really like how the clouds turned out and I think they look really good.
