Scratch Art Paper, Scratch Art Tools, Red Marker

My idea was to recreate the eerie feeling of being watched. I got this idea from emotions I have felt in the past. Nobody can go through life without feeling like somebody's watching them at some moment. Even when nobody is there it can still be felt. It usually occurs when you're alone in the dark, it may feel like someone is watching you.

I got a small piece of scratch art paper, then I got the tools. I first looked at some examples and had a few test runs to get used to the scratch art because I have never used scratch art before. Once I got a technique down I made the light pole. I then used some cross hatching to make the light pole. I scratched the outline of the suited man. I scratched out the tie to make the whole thing white. I used a marker to color it red, to draw eyes toward the man. After I finished the suited man, I needed something more. So I decided to make it look like it was raining. I made it look like it was night and the only rain that could be seen was in the light. Once I got the rain all scratched in, I was satisfied.

I like to think the idea of this artwork means to stay safe. The world is a messed up place and it's the reason we feel watched at times. Feeling watched is kind of the same feeling as feeling unsafe. If somebody is actually watching you, you don't feel safe. That is why I want this artwork to remind people to always watch your back. In a world like ours today anything can happen. The man in the artwork represents the feeling of being watched. He is the watcher.

The most difficult thing to pull off while doing scratch art is not making mistakes. I had to restart twice on this project because a big enough mistake can ruin the drawing. I overcame this struggle by really taking my time. Being careful with every scratch led to me getting the outcome I wanted. If I could start over I would change the whole emotion. Experimenting with the scratch art seems really fun and it would be cool to see what other emotions could be express with scratch art.

This style of art is realistic. An image of a man standing under a street lamp while raining could look almost the same to the drawing. It makes it unique to my style because I like to depict or see depictions of emotion through drawings. Everybody has a different depiction of emotion. I love how simple the drawing is. No motion besides the rain.

Colored Drawing 12 x 18

Paper, Chalk, Marker, Colored Pencils

My idea was to make a scene that represents being lost. I just came up with this idea when thinking of some emotions that fit my overall theme for this year.  But I also thought of a time where I was lost. I once was lost and it felt like I was lost in my own mind.

The first thing I did was traced out my hands and drew out a simple sketch with a pencil. I started on the galaxy first, I was going to use colored pencil but then used chalk because I could blend the colors better. Then I used black chalk drew all around and used my finger to blend everything. Once everything was blended I drew in the hands with colored pencil and the shirt in with marker. I thought on ways I could make it better. I then thought of making small white dots to symbolize stars. But then I saw the light table behind me and I decided to poke holes in the paper. Once I made different holes all different sizes, I used the table to light the circles up and shine through the paper.

This artwork is supposed to symbolize the feeling of being lost. It can also be any type of lost, physical or mental. I want my audience to be able to see this and reflect on a time where they might have been lost. I want them to realize that being lost is sometimes a good thing and if you're lost you can always be found.

The most difficult part was blending the colors. I had to be careful because it's really hard to un-blend colors that have already blended. I overcame this by being very careful and testing the blends on a different set of paper. If I could change something I would change the chalk to marker. I think the marker would give it a brighter look and if I used expensive markers I could blend them which would make it look more colorful.

This type of art is abstract art. Due to the shapes and colors it makes it an abstract piece of art. It makes it unique to me because it's what I think of when I think of being lost. My favorite part is the holes with light shining through because it's like there is actual stars.

Falling

Black and White Drawing 8 x 12

Graphite, Shaders, Erasers, Paper

My idea is to symbolize the feeling of falling. When one trips or falls there is a deep feeling that feels like the heart itself drops. I got this idea while scrolling through some ideas for a sketch. I saw someone falling and decided that it would be a good idea for a project. I never intended to make a project about falling but seeing a photo of someone falling gave me a good idea for a project.

First I sketched the circle to symbolize the Earth.  I then made a man who looks like he is falling. I only drew the United States because it's the only place I have ever been. I have never left the country. Then I used graphite and shaders to make it look like space. I also made an atmosphere around to Earth to give it a more realistic look. I then remember what I did for my last project which was poking holes to make stars. So that's exactly what I did. Finally after I was done, I used the light table to light up the back of the picture and have. the light shine through the holes.

This artwork is supposed to represent the feeling of falling. Whether it be physically or mentally, the heart always drops. I want my audience to think about anytime they fell and had a setback. But I also want them to remember that they got back up no matter how hard the fall was. This artwork symbolizes that I have only been in the United States, therefore the only places I have fell physically or mentally is in the United States.

The most difficult part was sketching the dude. I had to start over a couple times just to get it how I liked. I eventually overcame the challenge by sketching lightly and erasing any mistakes. I think if I started over I would try and draw all of the continents at least on one side of the Earth. I would also try and make it look like there was a lot of lights on in the countries.

This art style is realist yet surreal. The man and Earth along with the stars are all real things. But if someone was that far out of Earth without a suit or anything they wouldn't be alive. So that part factors into the surreal part of the drawing.  I think it is my style because it's how I visualize the feeling of falling. I love how the stars shine through the paper and how relateable this drawing may seem to others.

Bravery

Printmaking 9 x 6

Foam, Pencil, Ink, Paper

When I was making the sketch, I wanted an idea of bravery so I chose to draw a Templar Knight. I had the basic concept down but I wanted to make him look stronger so I made it look like he is in the midst of a fight while there are arrows in his shield and one in his shoulder.

Mrs. Dunlavey gave us the opportunity to make a print using one of our favorite sketches. I decided to use one of the sketches that fit my theme of emotions. I first got a printed copy of my sketch. I then used a piece of foam and used a pencil to make cracks where the ink would not go in. I used a roller and some gold ink after I was done tracing and covered it. Finally I pressed the ink on a white piece of paper.

I am really surprised with how it turned out. I thought I was doing things wrong but it actually turned out really well. I love how most of the details are able to be seen and it's what makes it pop. This is my style because it's how I see bravery in my eyes. I think that there is nothing braver than fighting for a country or fighting for something you believe in.
