Painting 2

Idenity

Ellie Lake "me & aleigha "

16x20, Acrylic paint on canvas, 2022

My idea to start was to paint a picture of me and my best friend Aleigha. I got this idea because this is a picture of us 2 that I really like. My inspiration came from my favorite picture of me and Aleigha. This process started with me painting the entire background blue. Then I began to sketch the faces on and then filled them in with paint. I decided to do this painting as my Identity painting because the painting has me and Aleigha in it and she is someone who is very close to me. There is no symbolic imagery in the work. The thing that was the most difficult part of this painting for me was to sketch out the faces because I am not very good at drawing. I overcame this struggle by taking my time. If I started over I think I would add a little bit more detail. This style of art is realistic because it is a painting of a real picture but it is not meant to look completely realistic. I think it is unique to my own personal style because of how the faces are. I love the blue background.

Narrative

Ellie Lake "hibiscus"

12x12, acrylic paint, 2022

My idea for this painting was to paint hibiscus flowers. I wanted to paint these flowers because these are the native Hawaiian flowers and the flowers I saw on my vacation to Hawaii. First I started by painting the background black. I wanted to make the background black because I wanted the bright flowers to be able to pop. Next I sketched out the flowers. Then I painted on the colors of the flowers. Last I added details including shading and small things. I used a paint brush. This artwork shows hibiscus flowers, which are the same flowers I saw on my favorite vacation that I took to hawaii. I want the audience to think about the significance of the flowers. The thing that was the most difficult for me was to draw the flowers because drawing is most difficult for me. I overcame this struggle by using a projector to draw the flowers. This is realistic art because it is picture of flowers painted realistically.

Life lesson

Ellie Lake "butterfly"

16x20, acrylic paint & paint markers, 2022

My idea to start was to paint a monarch butterfly because I think they are really pretty. This artwork evolved because at first I wanted to keep a solid purple background but I realized it looked too plain with a solid background so I added circles. An inspiration from a life lesson is when I had decided to be done with gymnastics it was a big change in my life. So butterflies remind me that change is good and brings new adventures. Life when they transform from a caterpillar to a butterfly. First I started by painting a solid purple background. Then I sketched out the butterfly on the canvas. Next I painting in the butterfly with color. Lastly I added purple circles in the background. I tool I used was to use paint markers to make the circles because it makes the circles more even. This artwork symbolizes that change is good in life and brings new adventures and opportunities. When my audience looks at this painting I want them to realize that change in life is good. The butterfly symbolizes change is good in life. The thing most difficult for me was to come up with something to make the background more interesting. I overcame this struggle by brainstorming ideas. I do not think I would change anything if I started over. This style of art is realism. It is unique because of the different patterned background. I love the meaning behind it.

Social Issue

Ellie Lake "mental health"

16x20, acrylic paint, sharpie, paint marker, 2022

My idea to start was to make a painting that showed awareness to mental health. Inspirations from life experiences? First I started by painting the background. I took different shades of blue and white and did stripes of paint on my canvas. Next, I sketched out the shape of a head on my canvas and then painted the line black. Last I filled the head with hurtful words that would be filling up the brain of someone struggling with mental health. I used paint markers and sharpies to write the words and to try and make them look messy. This artwork shows what the mind of someone who is struggling with mental could look like. The most difficult thing for me was drawing the head because I am not good at drawing. I overcame this by using a projector to help me trace the lines. This style of art is abstract. I love how it has a good message and is showing awareness.
