William Vanderbilt "Ritual Skull"

9” x 12”, Acrylic, 2021

I got my inspiration from it being close to Halloween so I thought of spooky. So I thought of a skull and as I got going I thought what if the skull had flames that went up into a ritual circle. And that’s how I got my idea. My process was starting with the ominous blue background. Then after it dried I drew on paper some skull ideas and chose one. I painted it on the bottom of the canvas. So that way I can make the ritual circle on top. I took a painted jug and painted around it with the red color and to get the circle. And I drew the star in the circle and finally I drew flames coming out of each eye up to the circle. When you look at my piece I want people to think kinda a spooky vibe but at the same time, people could think of a heavy metal album. One of the struggles I had was the blending of the fire which to me isn’t the best either. This leads me to that I would change the flame and maybe more flames coming out of the skull. And maybe a blue flame to a blue ritual circle. My art style of like fiction kinda and I’m still finding my style. I love that I could give it to my brother and he would like it since he is into spooky stuff.

William Vanderbilt “Fanda"

9” x 12”, Acrylic, 2021

I first got my idea by having to do an animal painting. And one of my favorite animals is a red panda so I decided to paint one. My process was I started with a background. Then I traced the red panda. I painted the red panda with layers and then I put in the little details. Then I traces outside of the red panda again but with a black paint marker and gave little detail with a white paint marker. The only thing to think about is this red panda and to kinda see what one looks like because they are not a well-known animal. So the most difficult part of this project is just getting an idea and sketch. I didn’t want it to be impossible for my first painting ever so I went with a simple design. And I would hundred percent change the background to maybe green in color and maybe have it sitting on a stone. I love that I was able to paint this animal in a cartoonish way because I grew watching cartoons so I like to draw kinda in that style.

William Vanderbilt "Mountain"

5” x 7”, Acrylic, 2021

My idea was to do something simple and easy for my landscape painting. I got my idea from a mountain I saw in Colorado. I did the blue background first. Then I did the mountain in the middle of the blue and worked my way down. Then I did the clouds and since I had white ready I did the snow on the mountain. This artwork means that nature is a good thing and we should take care of it. I want my audience to go and try to find the mountain I painted. The most difficult part of this painting is the blending of the snow into the mountain. I would change the background and have a sun.

William Vanderbilt "Sunset Sadness"

12” x 18”, Acrylic, 2021

My idea was that I wanted to make some sort of samurai. I got my inspiration from a picture and I just kept adding on to it. I also asked my classmate Quin Kuehl what I should do. Then all of a sudden she just does the background. Then I made the samurai and the grass on the bottom. My process was to ask Quin for help on the background. Then the I painted the samurai and I finished with the grass on the bottom. This artwork means not a lot to me but just a little because I like the samurai and what they stand for. I want my audience to think about how this samurai is the only one left of his unit and is standing in the middle of the battlefield looking at the massacure. I say the most difficult thing I did was actually painting the samurai. I just kept trying to get what I wanted and I got it. I love how I was able to recreate a samurai to the best of my ability
