Colton Penniston "Pitcher"
3x7, Stoneware and Glaze, 2025
This was my first actual ceramic piece that I made, and I decided to make this because I wanted to create a flower design and give it a handle. I flattened a piece of clay and then put the design on it, stood it up and connected it, and added the handle and the bottom. I used the slab roller and a needle tool. Making the handle was difficult for me because it fell off in the kiln, so I had to reattach it with glaze. I would change the color of the pitcher. The style of this art is functional. I like the shape of the pitcher.
Colton Penniston "Blue Mickey Mouse"
6x10, Stoneware and Glaze, 2025
My idea was to make the charcuterie board into the shape of Mickey Mouse. This was one of my favorite shows when I was younger. I used the styrofoam circles to make the shape, and then I connected the three bowls. I used a roller and a needle tool. This artwork just reminds me of my childhood and watching Mickey Mouse. Connecting the bowls was difficult for me because they wouldn't go together. I would change the color and make it the Mickey Mouse colors. This is a functional artwork. I like the pattern that I put on the clay.
Colton Penniston " Flower Bowl"
4x4, Stoneware and Glaze, 2025
This was my first attempt at making a wavey bowl. I saw someone make that type of bowl, so I wanted to give it a try. I used the slab roller, added the design, and then I used one of the styrofoam circles to make the shape. Then I added the wavy look. This artwork doesn't have a direct meaning. The most difficult part was making the wave in the bowl. I would change the size of the bowl and make it bigger. The style of the bowl is functional.
Colton Penniston "Midnight Ripple Bowl"
7x7, Stoneware and Glaze, 2025
This was my second time making the wavy bowl because I thought I could do better than the first one. I used the slab roller, a styrofoam circle, and a needle tool. I put the clay in the circle and hit it on the table so the clay would sink down, and then I would add the wavy look to the bowl, and then glaze it. Doesn't have a direct meaning; I just like the way these bowls look. I struggled with making the wave in the bowl. I wouldn't change anything about this bowl. I like the shape and the color. This is a functional style. I love the color of this bowl.
Colton Penniston "Rusty Bowls"
Different sizes, Stoneware and Glaze, 2025
I decided to make a set of the wavy bowls for my choice project. I got the idea from my other wavy bowls. I used the slab roller and the styrofoam circles. I cut out a circle of clay and put the clay on top of the circle, and hit it on the table so it would sink in. Then I made the wavy look for four bowls and then glazed them a blue color that has some brown in it. This doesn't have a direct meaning or symbolic imagery. Getting the right shape was tough for me because I had to make them the same for four bowls. I would do one less layer of glaze, so the brown shows through a little more. I really like the color of the bowl.
Colton Penniston "Pumpkin"
6x12, Stoneware and Glaze, 2025
I got the choice to make a pumpkin or a cookie jar, and I decided to make a pumpkin. I had to make coils and slowly build up until I could close the pumpkin. I had to smooth out the coils, and then I had to cut out the top of the pumpkin and add the stem. I used the coil machine, rib tool, and needle tool. This art doesn't have a direct meaning or symbolic imagery. The most difficult part was making the outside of the pumpkin smooth. I would make the stem curly if I could change something about it. The style of this art is a ceramic sculpture. I like the size of the pumpkin.
