Leaping Orcas

Brynlee Shimp, Leaping Orcas

8”x10”, Acrylic, 2022

I got my idea from a picture I took when I was in Florida a couple years ago on vacation. We went to Florida, we went to Sea World. We saw an orca show and I took a picture when they jumped out of the water. Originally the orcas were jumping out of a pool, and there were trees in the background, but I changed it to them jumping out of the ocean and didn't put any trees in the background. I thought adding the trees would take away from the orcas.

I first started off with painting the whole canvas a sky blue color. Then I drew the orcas with a pencil first to get the outline before I painted them black and white. After my orcas were painted I added waves over the back fins and down the rest of my painting. I used a fanned out brush to make my waves look neater. I also used a sponge to add clouds at the top of my painting and another small sun I painted in the corner.

When I was painting I thought about all the fun I had in Florida when it went. I remembered what we did and how much fun it was. When others look at my painting i want them to think of a time when they saw whale or orcas and think about how fun it might have been.

The most difficult part would have been the waves and trying to make them look good. I overcame my struggles by asking others for help on how to fix it and how to make the waves look better. If I had to change anything I would change the waves and make them flow together a bit better and look more like one wave. I tried to make my painting look realistic. I love the way my orca’s turned out.

A Day at the Beach

Brynlee Shimp, A Day at the Beach

9x12, Acrylic, 2022

I got my idea from a picture of a sunset I took when I was in Florida. One night in Florida we walked to the beach to watch the sunset. I thought the sunset was pretty, so I took a picture. Originally the picture was taken at night, with the sunset colors. When I painted the sunset I didn't like how it looked. So I painted over it with a light blue, and changed the time of day to during the day. Changing the time of day also changed the color of the ocean

I started off painting my whole canvas white. I tried to make the sunset, but I didn't like how it looked. So I painted over it with light blue. After that I added clouds. I took a small paint brush and put a mixture of blues and white dots in a cloud form. I then added the beach and ocean under the sky. After I painted the ocean I added white streaks and white dots and scribbles where the ocean and beach collided to make it look like the water was crashing into the beach. Finally I added a little purple umbrella, and I made it small to make it look like it was in the distance.

When I was painting I thought about how much fun the beach was and how much fun I had in Florida at the time. When other people look at my painting I want them to think of the beach. Think about how warm it is there, how much fun they had, and the memories.

The most difficult part for me to paint was the ocean and the waves. Trying to make it look like the waves cashing into the sand. I didn't want the white to overpower the blue color of the ocean. I overcame my struggles by asking others for advice on how to fix it. If i would change anything i would add more objects on the beach and maybe some stuff in the ocean to make it look more realistic. I tried to make my painting look realistic. My favorite part is either the clouds or the ocean.
