Drawing 1

Brooklyn Dykstra. "Black and White"

16x14, graphite, 2023

My idea was to draw a family portrait. Mrs. Dunlavey gave us ideas about what we could draw.  A family portrait came to my mind. This family portrait was taken by my parents in 2014.  My family has always been there for me. It is one of my favorite memories of when I was a child with my 3 sisters.

My steps for creating my family portrait. My first step was, going through my camera role to find a picture of my sisters all together. Then, I started sketching out my grid on a white piece of drawing paper. Next, I started drawing the picture on separate white paper. After a few weeks of outlining my sisters, I started adding the details with graphite and shading it in to look realistic. The last thing I did was get an okay from Mrs. Dunlavey that it looks good and is ready to be graded.

This artwork means a lot to me because I look up to my family. It is something to look at for memories of my family and the hard work put into this drawing.  I want my audience to see how close I am with my family and the bond that we had growing up.

Some things that were difficult in making this was creating the bark on the tree, the eyes and mouth on the faces, and the shading by the nose. Some ways I overcame this struggle were asking for help, trying different ways to get it to work, and not giving up. If I had to start over I would add more detail to the tree and make it look more clean, I would add more details to the body and the faces, and I would make it look more realistic and pop out.

My style for this artwork was realism. It's unique to my style because it is a creative drawing of a portrait and the hard work to make it look realistic. Something I love about this drawing is the hard work I put into this drawing to make it look as close to the photo as possible without using color.

Brooklyn Dykstra " Dog with Pheasant "

9x12", colored pencils on paper, 2023

My idea was to draw a dog with a pheasant. I asked my Dad (Scott Dykstra) to give me ideas to draw and he asked me to draw our dog with a pheasant in her mouth.  I drew Piper our German wire hair with the pheasant because in this picture was her first time going out hunting and retrieving a pheasant.

The first step I did to start this drawing was, looked for a picture of her with the pheasant. Then I printed the picture to get a closer look at it. Then, I drew graph lines on my sketch paper and on the photo. Next, I started sketching the picture on a separate paper. After sketching it I erased all my lines so they were very faint. After all these steps I started to draw the sketch with colored pencils.  The tools that I used were colored pencils. The technique I used were shading and layering.

This artwork means a lot to me because I love drawing animals and getting to draw my dog was a fun experience. It is something to look forward to later in my life and to see all the hard work put into it. i want my audience to see how much I care for my dog and how proud I am of her.

Some things that were difficult in making this was creating all the colors on the dog, all the colors in the grass, and getting the color of the dark spots in the snow. Some ways I overcame this struggle was by asking for help, and not giving up.  If u had to start over I would add more color to the dog's body and make it look like actual hair,  I would try to make it look more realistic.

My style for this artwork was realism. it's unique to my style because it is a creative drawing of my dog with a pheasant in her mouth and work hard to make it look realistic. What I love about this work is the time put into this to make it look as neat and realistic as possible.
