Amelia Griffin "Strawberry" (Baseline painting)
Paper & Acrylic, 2024
This was the first painting I completed in the semester. I was going for a realism painting with a simple object such as a strawberry. It was a simple process and only took an hour to complete.
Amelia Griffin “Changes”
16x20, Canvas & Acrylic, 2024
Changes. Everyone goes through changes. Whether they are tough or easy, they happen. The idea for this painting was to represent going through changes. The Chameleon is brightly colored and is “struggling” through changes. This idea evolved from just wanting to represent the tough changes I’ve gone through.
his process began with simply a sky-blue background. Slowly I added layers to the canvas with foliage, branches, and the focal point, the chameleon. I used images as my references and just sketched what I saw. I used blending techniques to make some leaves ombre and the chameleon’s tail.
The meaning of this painting is that changes are tough. But people learn to adapt. I want the audience to think this painting is relatable, as it should be for almost everyone. The most difficult part of this project was the chameleon. I wanted it to be slightly more colorful than the average or typical landscape painting. Another challenge was trying to make the leaves shiny. I wanted to achieve that dewy look a jungle would have, so I used some ModPodge. Unfortunately, the ModPodge did not work, and I did not add enough layers. So as a way to create a colorful focal point, I made the chameleon pop. If I could start over, I would make some more flora & fauna. I would also try to increase the depth of the painting. Considering my normal style of painting, I would say this fits in. This is a combination of abstract and realistic. It’s something different but also regular. It’s a landscape but also includes some abstract elements, like the eye-grabbing colors. I love the little details on the leaves such as the little ladybug.
Amelia Griffin “Til Death Do Us Part”
8x10, Canvas & Acrylic, 2024
One project we needed to create was a social issue. I’ve realized that too many people spend too much time on their phones. Phones are people’s addiction. I mean, what would it take for you to put your phone down? Some people never let their phone out of sight, they always reassure themselves they have it with them. It’s absurd. This painting is to show people and help them realize there is more to life than a screen and social media. If you look around, beautiful nature surrounds you.
My process always begins with a sketch. I used my phone and held it in one hand, while I sketched it with my other. I wanted to make sure I could get the human anatomy correct. I painted the background black before the sketching process to let the colors pop out. I painted the hand first. Then the phone and its background, with lots of custom colors. Then lastly I added the small details in all of the crevices and the app logos.
This artwork is to show the reality of society. People are always on a phone or a screen. People text and drive. Which, ultimately, can kill people. So I named this piece, “Til Death Do Us Part”. It seems some people spend their last moments with a phone, or all of their daily lives with them. What’s more important? Family? Or your phone? Social media is harmful. Even young kids have access to these harmful apps. I think as a society we should learn to put the phone down more often and live life to the fullest.
I struggled to create this painting. Firstly, this canvas was significantly smaller than my other pieces. Those fine details were hard not to smudge or make the lines too bold. My major struggle was the hand. I could paint the fingers fine, but the thumb was a struggle. This is why I decided to change it and make it into a skeletal arm, but still showing fleshy fingers. This is to show a hand dying. If I was to start over I would make the phone glowing in the darkness.
I feel this art style is surrealism. It shows the realistic qualities of an unrealistic scenario. But could this scenario come true in the future? This is different from my typical art style. But this has turned into one of my favorite paintings I’ve done and it shows depth in creating art with meaning.
Amelia Griffin "Abstract Mug"
Paper, Acrylic, & Watercolor, 2024
This painting was for my midterm observational project. I picked a mug to recreate in my style. For the shadows, I used watercolor. But for the background I used acrylic. It was a very simple process and not much thought was put into it.
