What IS a subject guide?  

Subject guides are lists of resources to assist students with research needs. Click the drop down arrows below to view subject specific materials.

Multi-Disciplinary Resources & Databases

Vermont Online Library : The Vermont Online Library (VOL) offers a wide array of electronic information databases on a variety of topics geared to a variety of age levels, for both generalists and specialists. The information is produced by known and trusted publishers and includes Gale Cengage Learning databases (via Vermont academic, school and public member libraries) and Universal Class online learning (via all Vermont public libraries.) Britannica School : Discover encyclopedia articles, multimedia, primary sources, games, and other learning resources that support student research and reinforce curriculum standards.

cK-12  : CK-12 has free resources for students, parents, teachers, schools, and districts.  It offers integration with google classroom, and covers STEM topics from Kindergarten through 12th grade (cK-12 Website Description).

Library of Congress : The Library of Congress is the largest library in the world, with millions of books, films and video, audio recordings, photographs, newspapers, maps and manuscripts in its collections. The Library is the main research arm of the U.S. Congress and the home of the U.S. Copyright Office (LoC Website Description)

Open Course Library  : The Open Course Library (OCL) is a collection of shareable course materials, including syllabi, course activities, readings, and assessments designed by teams of college faculty, instructional designers, librarians, and other experts (OCL Website Description). 

Lumen : This website offers a variety of math, science, English, business, history, and music open educational resources. 

Smithsonian : The Smithsonian Institution is the world’s largest museum, education, and research complex, with 21 museums and the National Zoo—shaping the future by preserving heritage, discovering new knowledge, and sharing our resources with the world (Smithsonian Website Description). 

English Language Arts & Literature

About Writing: A Guide : This writer’s reference condenses and covers everything a beginning writing student needs to successfully compose college-level work, including the basics of composition, grammar, and research. 

GALE Books & Authors : Answer the age-old question, 'What do I read next?' Search and match reading interests to books, authors, genres, or topics. (see Research page for login information) 

READ.gov : The Center for the Book in the Library of Congress invites people of all ages to discover the fascinating people, places and events that await you whenever you read. 

GALE: World Literature : Gale provides useful resources for researching and teaching about world literature. Explore articles, databases, collections and other resources.

OER Commons World Literature : A survey of world writers from the beginnings through the 1600s to the present day; includes literary analysis and writing about literature.

Global Citizenship

Skills Commons : Free resources for workforce development & education.

Ben's Guide to the U.S. Government : Ben's Guide to the U.S. Government, a service of the Government Publishing Office (GPO), is designed to inform students, parents, and educators about the Federal Government, which issues the publications and information products disseminated by the GPO’s Federal Depository Library Program. 

GALE Diversity Studies : The Gale OneFile: Diversity Studies explores cultural differences, contributions and influences in the global community. GALE World History  : Gale In Context: World History reaches back to the ancient world—and forward to today's headlines—to deliver a chronicle of the people, cultures, events, and societies that have formed the history of the human race. American Historical Association : The American Historical Association promotes historical work and the importance of historical thinking in public life.

Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History : The Institute is the leading nonprofit organization dedicated to K–12 history education while also serving the general public. Its mission is to promote the knowledge and understanding of American history through educational programs and resources.

cK-12  : CK-12 has free resources for students, parents, teachers, schools, and districts.  It offers integration with google classroom, and covers math topics from Kindergarten through 12th grade.

PhET : The PhET Interactive Simulations project at the University of Colorado Boulder creates free interactive math and science simulations.

Merlot : Merlot is a program of the California State University System. Here you can find materials from the Arts, Business, Education, Humanities, Mathematics and Statistics, Science and Technology, and Social Sciences. 

FDIC Money Smart : The FDIC's Money Smart financial education program can help people of all ages enhance their financial skills and create positive banking relationships. 

MyMoney.gov : Games, fun activities, websites, video games, and information about money for kids and youth. You will find links to information on how to save money, what to think about when shopping and buying, and how to a budget or a plan so you’ll have enough money when you need it.

Geogebra.org : GeoGebra is a dynamic mathematics software for all levels of education that brings together geometry, algebra, spreadsheets, graphing, statistics and calculus in one engine.

Khan Academy : Learn for free about math, art, computer programming, economics, physics, chemistry, biology, medicine, finance, history, and more. 

Science

National Science Foundation : According to their website, The National Science Foundation (NSF) is an independent federal agency created by Congress in 1950 "to promote the progress of science; to advance the national health, prosperity, and welfare; to secure the national defense..." NSF is vital because we support basic research and people to create knowledge that transforms the future.

CC Mixter : A community music site featuring remixes licensed under Creative Commons where you can listen to, sample, mash-up, or interact with music in whatever way you want. 

cK-12 Photography : CK-12 has free resources for students, parents, teachers, schools, and districts.  It offers integration with google classroom, and covers Photography topics for upper grades.

Europeana : Search, save and share art, books, films and music from thousands of cultural institutions.

World Languages

Duolingo : Learning with Duolingo is fun! With quick, bite-sized lessons, you’ll earn points and unlock new levels while gaining real-world communication skills.

 Open Culture Language Resources : This collection features lessons in 48 languages, including Spanish, French, English, Mandarin, Italian, Russian and more. Download audio lessons to your computer or mp3 player and you’re good to go. 

Open Learn : Are you looking for a new topic to explore, or wanting to dig deeper into something you've already discovered? Whether it’s a 60-second animated video or a 24-hour course you are after, you will find it on OpenLearn for free. 

U.S. Government Resources

GovInfo: U.S. Government Information : GovInfo is a service of the United States Government Publishing Office (GPO), which is a Federal agency in the legislative branch.

Occupational Outlook Handbook

The Occupational Outlook Handbook is a publication of the United States Department of Labor's Bureau of Labor Statistics that includes information about the nature of work, working conditions, training and education, earnings and job outlook for hundreds of different occupations in the United States.
