An introduction to scientific research methods in psychology. Emphasis on research design, experimental procedures, descriptive methods, instrumentation, and the collection, analysis, interpretation, and reporting of research data. Primarily for psychology majors, related majors, and other students desiring familiarity with scientific methods and improved critical thinking skills.

Student Learning Outcomes

Upon completing this class you will be able to:

  • Integrate the concepts of the basic types of scientific design to create a research study.

  • Compare different research methods and select the proper method for a specific research question.

  • Evaluate general research designs, experimental and non-experimental methods, and standard research practices.

  • Summarize guidelines for the ethical treatment of human and animal participants in research, particularly in culturally diverse communities, and the institutional requirements for conducting research.

  • Evaluate various strategies for data analysis in real world research and prepare a paper in the APA reporting style.

  • Prepare a paper discussing findings from a research study.

  • Critically evaluate research reports and synthesize a body of research findings.
