Computer Aided Design (CAD)
One-Half Year, 0.5 Credits
This course is an introduction to the many advantages of applying computer technology to the design and drafting areas of industry. The skills mastered in this course are highly marketable in the engineering, fabrication, fashion, landscape design and manufacturing industries here on Long Island.
Prerequisite: Technical Drawing or Design and Drawing for Production
Design and Drawing for Production
Full Year, 1.0 Credits
This course is an introduction to a universal graphic language through which students can express their ideas with creativity, clarity and exactness. This class teaches technical drawing through design problem solving and stresses that design is the creative element and technical drawing is the expression of design. Students are encouraged to solve visual problems using a common technical drawing language to describe forms in the man-made environment. This course fulfills the one unit of the Art or Music credit requirement for any student towards a Regents or Local diploma.
Woodworking
One-Half Year, 0.5 Credits
This half-year hands-on Woodworking course introduces students to a wide range of woodworking techniques and practices using both power tools and woodworking machinery. Students will learn essential skills such as cutting, shaping, sanding, and joining wood through practical instruction and guided practice. Safety procedures and proper equipment use are emphasized throughout the course to ensure students develop confidence and competency in working with various tools, including saws, planers, sanders, and drills. The course culminates with a final project where students will design, build, and finish their own Adirondack chair, which they will get to take home. This comprehensive project allows students to apply their skills and creativity while gaining experience in the complete design and construction process. Whether students are interested in pursuing a career in carpentry, furniture making, or just developing a lifelong skill, this course offers a strong foundation in woodworking and craftsmanship.
Residential Structures
One-Half Year, 0.5 Credits
In this course, students will have the opportunity to use the skills they developed in Woodworking on a larger scale. Students will be designing and constructing a shed. Framing, siding, windows and doors will be taught, giving students exposure to the skills needed to work in the construction field. Students should be prepared to work outdoors most days.
Prerequisite: Woodworking
Technical Drawing
One-Half Year, 0.5 Credits
The student will be introduced to the basic elements and processes of technical drawing that are common to many industries, trades and occupations. Students will record ideas and objects in the form of sketches, estimate proportions, develop line values, complete object and line exercises using the tools, equipment and materials of the draftsperson. They will also describe the Alphabet of Lines, construct horizontal, vertical, inclined, perpendicular and parallel lines using T squares and triangles, produce lettering that is compatible with ANSI standards, space numbers, fractions, letters, words and lines for uniformity of appearance. Students will explain standard dimensioning practices, investigate career opportunities in the field of technical drawing, solve geometric construction problems, identify various types of sections and prepare an isometric drawing and an auxiliary view.
3D Printing, Design and Production
One-Half Year, 0.5 Credits
Do you want to make something using a 3D Printer? This course is for you. In this course students will learn how and when to use a 3-Printer. They will have the opportunity to use their creativity to design objects that they will then turn into 3D structures. Taking this course will enable students to increase their planning, critical thinking, reasoning and creative skills. They will develop strong communication and collaboration skills as they work with their peers. This course can be taken by students in grades 10-12.
